need to get this off my chest...
« on: 24 November 2010, 15:45:39 »

why is it that people see all modified cars as being "boy racers"  and think they all drive saxo's?

i know this may seem pathetic but, as a modified car enthusiast, its really starting to bug me. I've seen a few posts on here recently that refer to modified car owners as "chavs" and "yoofs" (or as i like to say "YOUTHS") and all of them driving saxo's!

Im 21, i love my modified cars. I drive an Omega and yes it is modified. no i DO NOT sit in a car park attempting to drift or do burn outs in attempt that the opposite sex my find me slightly "cool".
let me put it this way, a local car club here, Dorset Scoobys, mainly consist of members that are 30+ (from what i have seen, it may not be the case the people i hav seen hav their kids with them)
They have flamers on their exhausts and loud sound systems. I have seen more people in that age group act more of a T*** on the roads than i have young drivers. (i AM NOT refering to anyone from Dorset Scoobys)

Why is there a generalisation of "look a modified car, the owner must be a chav"?

Im not a "chav", i dont try to impress the opposite sex with how loud my car is, or how "cool" it looks.
My car does have a loud exhaust, but i like the sound of it. My car has a cold air feed a. to give my car a little bit more go and b. i like how it sounds. i have a fairly loud sound system because i like my music and love bass. At the moment i am currently doing a lighting install on my car to draw attention to other enthusiasts, mainly to do with my work but, its different.
MOST people modify their car to make them different to others. mines going to hav so many LED's on it, it will be hard to look at.

So basicly, i am fed up with people saying young people driving modified cars are "chavs" and instantly assume they will or have been in many crashes, will sit in car parks acting like T***s
Yes there are some that are the above, and its the very few minority that have given the rest of us this absolute utter bs image because they feel the need to be cool and try to impress the opposite sex.

rant over, feel better now  :)
feel free to have your say on this :y :y

Don't worry Xplicit us older folk certainly do not think all you youngsters drive and act like "boy / girl racer"!! :y :y

We, and certainly I, were once your age and of all the people I knew none modified their cars or raced them.  It is no different now from what I can see, the young can just afford to run the car they have (just like we did), especially with insurance as it is!! :o :o :o  Obviously you do see a minority who 'soup up' their cars a bit, but the vast majority just drive normal, everyday cars, and my generation think nothing more than that as far as I am concerned 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Once more, we were all young once!!   Enjoy it  whilst you can :D :D :D :D :y

I have no problem with people modding cars to look individual as long as they're still safe, legal, taxed, MOT'd and insured  :y

In my experience a beautifully modded car is more likely to be well looked after and carefully driven (and insured) than some ratty old banger on 4 bald tyres  ;)

The problem is, "modified" cars are a bit of a "Marmite" thing. Folk will either appreciate it or think it's sad and pointless.

It's probably not helped (in my opinion) by the fact that a lot of modified cars draw attention to themselves by having been rendered illegal in some respect or by being driven inconsiderately. :(

As with so many things in life, a few cretins can spoil it for the majority.

I've modified my car, I've put the 'go faster' stripes on back to front, so that everyone can see I now go slower......

Well you said feel free to have my say.  So I will.

There's a reason why cars like the Saxo/Corsa/206 etc are labelled as chav chariots.  Their relative cheapness puts them in reach of spotty, tone-deaf oxygen thieving streaks of piss, while their cringeingly bad so-called modifying antics merely mirror their low intelligence and continuing waste of the planet's natural resources.  Slapping tint on glass & lights, shoving a drainpipe on the end of the exhaust and gaffer taping lights onto the floorpan ain't modifying, it's just conspicuous consumption of tat made by people working ridiculous hours in the Far East.  Cutting three inches off the spings ain't modifying, it's a demonstration of utter ignorance of suspension dynamics.  Throwing in wire-melting amplifiers ain't modifying, it's a complete lack of appreciation of ICE and how to really appreciate music irrespective of your tastes.

Modifying just ain't what it was........  ;)

i'm looking for a small car for my boy, and he will probably put a chrome tailpipe on it and tinted windows and whatever else he thinks will make it look a bit cool. hes 17 and thats what they do. i was a boy racer, wrote off about 6 cars before i was 21. even rammed a car off the rd once. young and wreckless and happy. who cares what others think. todays youngsters are not a lot different from anyone i know my age who were young once.  :)

Dunno how not to sound like a hypocrite on this one. I'm not into over body kitted Puntos with a baked bean tin hanging off the exhaust, i killed one off the lights with my caravan in tow!!! That said we were all young once. I remember covering most of the interior of my old fords with fur & a chain link steering wheel in my teens so understand bad taste.
At 21 it's fine, enjoy it even if the "music" is pants. Still doing it at 31??? Oh dear! :o ::)
