Don't see anything wrong with youngsters modifying their cars for a bit of individualism and think it's probably more of a a hobby to most of them. Let's face it, as young boys nearly all of us had a keen interest in cars and the better looking or faster, the better. I can remember my first car in the 70's - a Ford Anglia that I spent a lot of time "souping up" and modifying. I remember saving up and eventually getting a set of 5.5J Rostyle wheels (a must have in those days) and had slightly larger tyres fitted. Found out I couldn't turn the wheels full lock without hitting the wheel arches. Out came the hacksaw and problem solved! ;D Even in those days, had a large bore noisy exhaust fitted and thought the car sounded the mutts nuts although my parents weren't in agreement!! ::)
So in essence, things haven't really changed that much. ;)
