The AA wont touch it! Remove the fuse that feeds the lpg system. There will be a thumbwheel valve inside the airtight box on the tank, close it tight (clockwise).

Look in the plastic cover on tank there should be a cut off, small brass screw on mine.

But turning off the ignition should shut the valve anyway, as should switching to petrol I would have thought. But best turn the engine off as I'm sure you have already.

without the engine running? Its lost pressure then, as Chris says the LPG tank has a cover with a cut off valve.

Is it an SGI or Mixer system?

right, using smart phone so ecuse englisl, currently stuck in epping forest, 1.4 tigra, wit seq lpg, took it for itianian spin cos son said not ruunimg right, after 20 mins lpg starts coughong with a server smell of lpg, cuts out, lift bonnet lpg  pissing out of a inline thing, before onjecters, could be a filter ni odea, the hose after the filter about 4inches before the 4 injecter bank is frosed white and pissing lpg big time, ing off, key out still hossing, make maters worse pld bill just turned, not happy, thinking aa total waste of time, no tools on board

Looked under spare wheel, it got a plastic cover with some shrange plastic 2 nuts holdong it dowm, police not happy threating to call firebridgade.

Lpg is still leaking with the keys, should it not shut ostself down with a leak???

Pipe's frozen and buggered the seal... It is only releasing the pressure in the pipe so should stop shortly.

Remove plastic cover and inside there will be a knurled wheel... Turn it all the way until it stops and that will isolate the tank, then (once leak has stopped) drive on petrol alone

It will continue to leak for a few minutes while the LPG in the pipework dissipates.

Try to discourage attendance of the fire brigade. They will probably cut the roof off and fill it with foam! There's no danger provided you are in a nice clear area where the gas can evaporate and disperse. Don't touch the electrics. A spark is the last thing you need right now. Just let it disperse. If you can find a cutoff valve in the gastight box on the tank then it won't hurt to turn it off.

Once it's stopped leaking and you're sure it's safe, remove the fuse powering the LPG system so it can't open the gas valve. It should just run on petrol.

OK, back home now with car, with petrol, Fire bridge called out via police (not happy), LPG hissing stopped after 20 mins with keys out, managed to convince FB that all was well by showing them your post on the Satio Phone, so really well done Guys, FB followed me home (no probs, happy to do it), Police came along for the ride, still not happy, but alls well, FB really friendly about the whole thing.

Thanks OFF, saved my sons car from being potentially foamed or worse.

Possible but unlikely TBH!

Probably not actually much vapour coming out and if the pipe runs are long then quite possible

Job for tomorrow I guess sounds like it needs a good check over

No, the spare wheel tank had a plastic cover on it which was sealed by 2 plastic screws about  the size of 1 inch plastic bolts. (no tools onboard) best I can describe is a Rolex plastic back knerld  type spanner thingy.

It didn't seem like a pipe releasing its predefined pressure , more like the gas tank was starting to empty its self.

BTW, if you do ever have a fire in your lpg car, it is alot more dangerous than just a normal fire. The tank will vent, as the pressure is gradually released, the time between the venting will increase until BOOM! And you have no car!

So if the worst should happen, stay well away if the tank is involved in the fire and you see it venting.

Utter crap, unless the system/tank is very old or incorrectly installed! It's more likely that the plastic petrol tank will explode than a LPG tank because the LPG tank will vent at a set pressure, a petrol tank won't!

That said, I'd stand clear of any car on fire! But, if an LPG car catches fire it is vital that the attending Fire fighters are informed as it needs to be handled differently

As I am actually a firefighter who has attended hundreds of cars fires, this is not utter crap. How many car fires have you been to Lazydocker?

Petrol tanks don't explode, this is the rubbish you see on TV, they breach causing an unefficient burn of petrol which results in a small uprising in the flames and alot of black smoke. And as explosions are a fast and efficient burning of fuel, this isn't one!

As for LPG, you are wrong. It sounds like you don't have a great understanding of how it reacts in fire. I try to give him some safety info should his car ignite, and you say the opposite. I think it is you talking utter crap!

Ask yourself why it needs to be handled differently, as you mentioned.

Geoff, please accept my appologies for sounding so rude... It wasn't my intention

However, a correctly installed LPG tank that is under about 7 or 8 years old will not explode... It will vent safely, in a controlled manner.

I know that modern petrol tanks don't explode, that was why I used it as an example! The reason I said about handling it differently is because, unlike a leaking/ruptured petrol tank, with a venting LPG tank you can normally stop the fuel from leaking by lowering the pressure inside the tank (cooling it )

I also agreed that you should stay clear of any car on fire (and yes, I have attended a handful, although nowhere near as many as you will have Geoff) because fire is dangerous! If it is hot enough for the LPG to start venting then the car is toast anyway!

I will emphasise, however, that what I have said about the LPG venting safely is dependent on the tank and system being under about 8 or 9 years old and correctly fitted, something which most people probably wouldn't know. Incidentally, all Sequential systems should meet these criteria but, with some of the "professional" jobs I've seen and put right I wouldn't want to bet my house on it!
