Any tropical fisk keepers ?
« on: 29 November 2010, 08:39:01 »

Is there any tropical fish keepers on here that could give me a bit of advice please.

I am looking for an air pump that will inflate a low pressure air bed. The reason being my son has friends to stay quite regularly and this means I either have to pump it up but hand or go into the garage and start my main compressor. It needs to be silent to avoid waking the rest of the household.

I appreciate these pumps are not built for this purpose, but it only needs to do the main filling if that makes sense.

Thanks all.

Thanks Richie. The only problem is I am looking for a silent pump. The argos one will probably make to much noise. I thought about the fish taks ones as they are virtually silent. I appreciate they are not designed to inflate things.

the output of an aquarium pump will be useless for this, they are incredibly low pressure, wont have the guts to put anywhere near enough pressure in.

How about this one then? ::) http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3406199.htm

I'm no expert but I doubt a fish tank compressor would be able to kick out the volume of air to fill a camp bed, nor would it be able to do the pressure.

There are some good, and quiet camping pumps, that run of 12 / 240 / batteries, I would look at one of those.

Ive a variety of aquarium pumps here, (used to be in the trade  :y )
and even my big one cant push bubbles through an airstone 3ft deep, they are low volume, miniscule pressure pumps.

you can hardly hear the pump when its running, have you tried going to millets or a camping shop, you can see how quiet they are in the shop then. my fish tank pump would never fill an inflatable up plus you would need some sort of pipe to go over the 6mm pipe.

Agreed, and even if they could muster the pressure they'd take until morning to shift the required volume of air.

I understand what you are saying. This pump says 600litres an hour http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/600-LITRE-SUPER-SILENT-AIR-PUMP-AQUARIUM-N-R-/310273301480?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item483dbadbe8

I appreciate it may not supply any/much pressure, but just hoping it could do the main fill, and the just use raw puff for the final bit  ;D

It just wont have the grunt to lift the weight of the airbed fabric.

IF i could be bothered converting an airline tube to fit an airbed, Id video the results for you (ive more powerful pumps than your link).

Its a non starter, they wont work with any back pressure, and the weight of the fabric will provide too much.
