Extreme weather
« on: 19 December 2010, 10:53:25 »

does anyone have a link to numbers of extreme weather events around the world over the years(and what do you define as extreme)? is it me or is the planet seeing more and more? just the numbers - i'm not interested in who did what to whom  :y

i read a report from NASA written in 2000 that said we'd see more flooding, heavier precipitation, colder winters, hotter summers etc now to me that feels correct but i'd like to see the numbers  :o

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/view.php?id=21200

they're linking it to warming, but lets not - we've been over that - just the number of extreme events, we can worry about the "why" on another thread  ;)

There's no way to record extreme weather events as such for the simple reasons that

a) Accurate weather records (temps, rainfall, windspeed etc) don't go back that far, i.e just a century and a half at best which is nothing in the grand scale of things

b) Recent recording of weather-related "disasters" has been done on the basis of insurance payouts, deaths etc. Given the higher population, urbanisation and the growth of the insurance claims business these have naturally trended higher (though not remarkably so, it must be said). I did have a link but can't find it right now.

And finally,

c) The growth of worldwide media reporting has greatly increased the publication of weather-related incidents, whilst the AGW business has heightened people's fear of "abnormal" weather.

Essentially, the weather we are experiencing has occurred before at various times in our history.

Indeed it has Nick, and will go through this cycle time and time again over centuries to come. ;)

What he said ^^^^^^^^

We've been here before. Back in the 1940's-1950's. Weather patterns are constantly changing. It has always been thus, and always will be. Taxing the populas ever stupid amounts won't change this.

These current so called 'extreme' weather trends don't worry me one jot.

As a poster above has already stated, mankind hasn't been measuring weather accuratley enough for long enough to gauge whether this weather is extreme or just a regular cycle.

Whilstever data is collected by some camps in a dubious manner to fit in with their own plans and quest for funding, (as in temp stations being located right next to air-con units for example, in order to give false reading of an increase in mean tempratures), and so called 'experts' such as those at the University of East Anglia continue to make false claims, I'll take it all with a pinch of salt and use my own eyes and judgement to decide if the weather is extreme, or (as the case may be) not.

I remember winters and summers like this as a kid. Back then we had four sensible words for "climate change". They were Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter, neatly packaged up into a shorter phrase of "Seasons".

Check out the 1917-1923 period for snowfalls as we have now, indeed, probably worse.
This is the best I can dig out right now, BJ. UK only, but some references to world weather. Fascinating information. :y

I actually remember that! In fact, I recall there a cricket match that was suspended due to snow. :o :o
That year, of course, preceded the 1976 very hot, dry (drought) summer, for which period I spent mainly at the local swimming pool with a girl from Scandinavia.... Memories, eh? ;)
