How Much Per GALLON

After reading STMO's thread it got me thinking, how much was a GALLON of fuel when you passed your driving test.

I passed in 1979 but cant remember if it was 32p per gallon or £1.32, I have a felling it will be the latter.

Imagime filling the Mig up from empty.

£21.78  (16.5 x £1.32)

When I got my first moped in 1975 it was around 50p per gallon.
I was working in a petrol station in late 78/ early 79 when it went over £1 per gallon. :y

Fuel was apparently 6 Shillings and 6 Pence per gallon when I passed the test.

According to this at any rate.

I remember passing my test, buying a car....and heading off for a trip round scotland the next week!  Great way to really learn to drive.

Im sure the average was about 45p a litre, some wanted 50p, But that was too much, I waited for the next station!

I remember it was about £1.70- £1.80 a gallon. We were wondering in disbelief if it could ever top £2 a gallon. ;D PMSL

Interesting chart there, didnt realise unleaded didnt come in till 1988

Also how much we getripped off for fuel duty.

Quote
Notes:
1.
Tax (fuel duty) was introduced in 1909, suspended in 1919 (when car tax was introduced) and reintroduced in 1928.
2.
There are no costs for 4* Equiv (or LRP) for 2005 as this fuel was becoming increasingly unavailable. We have been able to source prices for Super Unleaded again which have been included.

The equivalent of around £0.35 per gallon in todays money when I passed my test in 1971. I had a part time job at a petrol station back then and motorist's regularly used to come in for 10 bob's worth (£0.50) or a quids worth of fuel.

For some reason I though that petrol was 50-something a gallon when I first had a bike in 1979. According to both the links I was wrong, more like £1/gallon  :-/ :-/
