I deleted the post before I saw your reply, BJ since, with hindsight, I thought it was wrong to post information I could not corroborate (I love that word!).  ;) ;D

you corroborate these posts?  :o :o :o ::) :y

Cheeky young devil! No games for you at playtime!

PS. I see Plomien corroborated my surmisal. I was pretty sure it was the same  "Mair Gibbs" Labour councillor and chair of govs, but erred on the side of caution. ;)

When I was 10 i was involved in an accident leaving me with a 14" scar accross my head.

1st day back I was whacked with a football opening  the front part of the operation.

Later that year a lad was knocked out cold with a cork cricket ball on the playing filed.

1st year at high school I ended up at the bottom of a rugby scrum and the head was split open again.

2nd year a teacher was nearly speared with a javalin because he thought the youth would not get with in ten feet of him never mind a few metres past him.

School sports events I was given a large archery bow and arrows that where too short which ended up with an arrow throgh the skin between thumb and index finger.

The list goes.

Where was H&S in those days.

Nobody died or got seriously injured.

Love it ---- God, those cricket balls were hard !!!

Are kids allowed near javelins these days ??

I have first hand knowledge of the pressure a headteacher is under with regards to stuff like this. They are scared to sanctiion anything remotely risky in case of litigation.
And I think you'll find that this chap was dismissed because of his failure to communicate his intentions to the head, thus leaving the school/governors/local authority open to accusations of neglect.

Absolute nonsense!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

If this country is going to produce the required world leading engineers, scientists, physicists, and general adventures, we need to get rid of stupid restrictions on our children's learning and activities like those that have reared their head in this ridiculous case!   >:( >:( >:(
Lizzie financial services is what we do, not technical stuff.  And we need our financial servant's heads to be protected otherwise they might stop lending money to other financial services and give it to themselves.

ive 5 kids all of which loved sledging even the 14 mth old baby who was well impressed sat on daddys knee down a steep hill and the little lass of 5 was sledging down the decking steps , down the garden and stopping at the shed (literally) let em be kids ! too many NO WIN NO FEE companys wanting to know if you wud like to claim against your school, nanny, local playground ect cos you stubbed your toe when you were 3 yrs old thats why kids arnt allowed to sneeze without someone doing a risk assesment first , not the schools fault i suppose, they have to follow guidelines

I think most of the comments I would make have been made.....

There is a Primary School in Stockton that did not close last year or this because of the snow, the head teacher embraced the weather, invited the children to bring in their sledges and used the weather to create learning experiences and fun..... :y

I don't blame the school at all - or the government, really.

The problem is that if little billy breaks a fingernail, the parents are poised ready to sue for damages for all the mental anguish and future loss of earnings. Because of that, the school has to be insured and have 'watertight' H&S policies so they can get away with the bare minimum and/or have their insurance cover any losses. :-/

Now.. if we could somehow stop people for suing each other for accidents..

i say anyone trying to sue the school should have to face a 12 person jury made of ordinary tax-payers who can vote on 3 decisions..either:

a) don't be so 'kin stupid
b) go ahead, sue the school
c) give your stupid kid a slap, then see a)

surely its not that difficult  ;D :y
Banjax - you sound like an old school Tory. :y :D ;D ;D

I agree. It's easy to say how stupid it is, etc. but if I were responsible for a school and the hundreds of kids therein I would be walking on eggshells, and there certainly wouldn't be any sledging, more's the pity.

Yes, we all had impromptu treats such as this back in the good old days but these days everything must be risk-assessed, the proper insurance cover put in place, it must be tested to be accessible, inclusive, politically correct, environmentally friendly, etc... If you didn't lose the will to live half way through the inevitable box-ticking exercise you'd find it was spring by the time you'd finished.

It's our culture that's at fault. We reap what we sow.

I know that is the perception, but we still are leading the world in many specialist areas, such as aviation, engineering on high tech levels (ie nautical and civil engineering ), and scientific research with high tech development.

These may not employ the hundreds of thousands that the old industries used to, but do produce considerable billions of pounds of income for the country, as does the financial services sector. ;)

I should think that both the CPS and the Police have got it in for that bloke. I have no idea why though, as he looks like a fine upstanding pillar of the community, the sort of chap you would like your Daughter to marry :)
