Bought a little toy to record some trips I have planned for the GS this year, its a bullet camera to a recording unit:



Should do job ok-ish! - 8Gb on board storage, and expandable via SD cards.

Off home tomorrow to play with it! But my plan is to mount the camera on top of my helmet to reduce vibrations, i've played around before with cheapo £7 quid camera, results worked well, but its not suitable for week long trips, and preview footage on the go was an issue.

Trouble is that cable is quite long (which is fine) but idealy I want to be able to dis-connect it at shoulder level, when taking my helmet off for fuel/food/breaks ect.

I've no idea what I will find in this cable, whats best method to do this what kinda of connectors would be suitable?

id just leave it coiled up that like and find some tidy way of doing it rather than start chopping them micro wires up

Your starting point is to see how many pins are in the connector that is there.  Chances are there's video, audio and power but I may be wrong.  Then you need a waterproof inline male/female connector that you can unplug with your gloves on.  Lemo make lovely connectors but you'd have to see if any are light enough for that application.  Otherwise try to see what other users have found success with.

Don't forget that your helmet can be compromised by mounting stuff to it.

It did cross my mind, i've yet to see what kind of connector that is, it maybe bespoke or a standard video cable  :-/

Gloves not really an issue, as i take them off to unbuckle helmet anyway. But it does need to be water-proof really.

I've seen quite a few cameras mounted on helmets, don't appear to cause problems.

Find a way to bike mount it, with proper mounts. Or investigate proper, official (and no doubt expensive) helmet mounting equipment.

Standard 3M adhesives should be fine, if its rated for plastics:

By law, motorcycle helmets only have to be crash tested at 13mph!

Cut the cable, twist the wires together and wrap in gaffa tape. Attach camera with more gaffa tape, or have you stopped doing the student bodges now?

Never!   

Tbh Gaffer tape is on my maybe list, its not going to be that corrosive, and its multiple use 

Most likey going to go with heavy duty Velcro, quite few posts on GS forums about it, it works surprisingly well!

3M, being a chemicals outfit, make all sorts of different adhesives. Some would probably melt it

Although my lid may have only been tested at low speed, I'm glad in the knowledge I haven't done anything to potentially weaken/reduce its effectiveness for that day I'm eating tarmac at 60mph....

You're missing the point tunnie. You (or me) are not skilled in helmet design and construction. I know you read things on internet forums, therefore they must be true, but those people aren't either.

Maybe it wont affect it, but just maybe it will. Maybe if it does, you'll never have need to test it, or it may even survive. Lot of maybes, and for what? To look like a gay poofter?

I personally wouldn't mess around with my safety systems, potentially compromising them, as I don't want a life eating through a straw...

I understand what your saying, I just want to record what I see, a record for me and the trips done.

Cheers, seen those, but mines got an audio/video feed where that mounting screw should go!

I am looking at suction caps, which then have flat surface I can mount a camera on, but they stuck out a long way!

You mean speakers and mic that were purpose designed for helmets, and designed in such a way that no glues or tape is used?
