Internet problems
« on: 29 January 2011, 20:30:41 »

Since mid yesterday afternoon I have had problems with my AOHell broadband.

I can access many sites .. but there are just as many that I can't.

There is no error generated by IE or Firefox ... it just sits there saying "loading ........" and never gets anywhere.

Initially I thought it was https (secure) sites .. but its not .. I can access HSBC and Natwest but I can't get to Birmingham Midshires or Paypal.

I can get to here .. but I can't get to Bt.com

I don't believe it to be my computor as the same occurs on this one, the lapto, and the phone on WiFi. I can access all sites using the phone on "mobile".

This leaves just AOHell servers or my wireless modem/router. I've checked the settings on the modem/router and all look good. I've flushed the DNS caches on both the laptop and this computor

As you can imagine ... AOHell representative on the phone ... I believe speaking from Delhi, assures me there is nothing at all wrong with AOHell and will not progress the problem any further as I use an "unsupported modem" .. and suggests I ring Belkin. As I don't think its the modem I have not done this.

Anyone any ideas on  :

a) What else I can do from this end to check/fix the problem ??

b) Which ISP I should tell AOHell I am changing to

c) How long it takes to change ISP from AOHell to one that works...

BTW .. I have been with AOL many, many years and until they became part of "talk, talk" (well named as they don't listen, listen)I was well happy.

:(

You with Sky? Broadband from them is actually very reliable, I had a line installed in my bedroom at home, connection was hammered, stayed stable!

That said BT which is in the office at home was bullet proof in reliability, we maybe bounced that modem once a year!

If your on a monthly subscription, it should be fairly instant to switch, just cancel the contract and go with BT or whoever.

Tried a hard reset of your modem/router?

I'm looking to move away from Pipex for about 2 years (but been too lazy to get on with it ::)), ever since they were taken over by Talk Talk (or more to the point, Carphone Warehouse whom I detest).

Trouble is, I live in the sticks so any of the advertised offers don't apply, due to the rubbish exchange, except BT. Now I get a reasonable speed with Pipex (1.5meg) but all others seem to be quoting .5meg :(

Zen is a good contender at the moment, although they are pricey, or back to BT

Should add... I wouldn't touch AOL with a bargepole as their software is almost viral! ::) ::)

But you are part of AOHell .. as AOL are part of Talk,Talk, who are part of Pipex who are part Carphone Whorehouse .... .. :(

AOL without their software is very simple to setup and use .... especially using a wireless router .. :)

sounds like a dns error, have you tried pinging the sites or tried a different pc?
I assume you have deleted browsing history (cookies etc)
try this:
Open a command prompt. To open an elevated Command Prompt window, click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /flushdns

I would try a different modem and a different lappy which is not yours..

and try "tracert www.somewhereelse.com" from cmd line
will show you where it hangs

If you have a possible DNS issue then use a free DNS such as 4.2.2.2

Done a couple of tracert to 3 different sites that don't work ... they all time out at some point .. but the IP's are different for each site .. but always the same for THAT site .. if you get my drift ...

BT times out at 62.172.57.218 - 11 steps

Paypal times out at  194.25.208.10 - 9 steps

esavings times out at 62.172.57.2 - 11 steps

:(

They probably would due to firewalls.

Only thing to note is that they are getting to the router pre the firewall. Thus you'd see something like xxxxxxx.ukcore.bt.xxxxxxxxxx for the BT site

dns:156.154.70.22
alternate dns :156.154.71.22

try those dns adresses (will need reboot)

and try opening closing your router to change ip

and also test with safe proxies
