Is it me or has the Forum Changed??
« on: 06 February 2011, 00:54:46 »

I like many have been on this Forum for a while. I used to come on here every night and laugh my sides sore at the fun we used to have. It was exactly like going to the pub with a load of your mates and having the best laugh you could imagine, but, still being in your own home. We even had a quiz night..
I could not wait to get on here after tea to meet up with everyone again.
It may sound sad, but its true.

And yet something seems to have changed or at least it does to me.... and I aren't sure exactly what!

I love going to the Meets and meet up with Friends who have also put theirselves out to go, some have even driven over 600 miles round trip. And yet always I could write down who will actually be there. The huge posters of the Forum never seem to appear, that puzzles me also when they enjoy or so it seems the Forum too..

General Car Chat used to be " I am gonna fit some springs on my MV6 and if I get chance maybe do an oil change!" now it seems to be "My Skoda seems to have a missfire at 5000 rpm any idea why?"

General Disscussion seems to full of total crap, posts seem to be so serious... people taking the hump.... someone having a bad day then typing it out .... what is that all about?

And the best one using it as Ebay to sell your cars....

So before anyone thinks I am pointing my finger I aren't, I am asking if anyone feels like this, if so what do they think has changed?? how on earth do we get the laughs back which seem to have being lost?

To be honest I don't see it that way....BUT I DO see quite an increase in folks having millions of Omega problems.....me included.

I haven't been an OOF member for all that long really but do know it to be invaluble to me, literally on a day in day out basis it would appear.

Nice to know that I'm not the only one who needs me head examined  ;) :D ;)

Depends what "you're" after I guess.

As we have discussed Daz,I completely agree. I too can remember many nights when I laughed until my stomach muscles hurt due to the banter on here. Many of the "old faces" have disappeared, and many new ones come along, which has inevitably changed the dynamic. There is also the fact that it has become international, and some complaints have been made to admins about certain subjects etc. so it has been unavoidable that a degree of PC  has crept in.Some of the things we usedto joke about wouldnt be allowedthese days, but I dont think that is by any means the biggest part of the problem.
I may be guilty of too much seriousness myself as I do enjoy a bit of political discussion etc. but we have always had that on OOF, we just dont have the laughs we used to.
I dont know the answers mate, I wish I did.I suspect that some peoples fuel budget restricts them from driving long distances to meets etc. although Im sure thats not the only reason there arent hundreds of people at every meet.
I suspect tbh that part of the reason there isnt so much fun is that some of your old sparring partners dont come on here much any more - Mike Dundee being the one which immediately springs to mind. It could also be a that we get more familiar with everyone on here and dont find each other as funny and fascinating as we used to ? :-/
Even people like TB/H21/Markdtm (who all used to spend almost every waking hour on here) dont seem to get as involved as they used to. This has been going on for maybe a couple of years now, not sure if there is a solution tbh. :(

Having said all that, I still think its the best forum on the web. Just not as good as it used to be. ;)
Maybe newer members who dont know what we are on about could read back through general chat from about two or three years ago. It might be more obvious how much of a laugh it used to be. :-/

I know that its the best forum and the most helpful forum on the internet I would never question that at all.
I personally would do anything I could to help the Forum if I could.
As for Mike Dundee he is one of my Best Friends, but he is only one of the people that used to lighten the place up...

im a relatively new member and enjoy a right laugh.... however when i post something i think is funny in the general discussion area i get somebody come back and tell me ''think before you post on here'' and stuff like that.

i do try and get on here everynight but there's been a few occasions ive thought ''i work hard at work and come home to an overly serious forum and sum snide comments so 'dangle berries' i wont go on again''. but i do come back. :-? :-? :-?

One persons "banter" is another persons "insult" .. it used to be (IMHO) that if you didn't like what someone posted, you just ignored it .. bit like walking away from a drunk in a pub .... now it seems that if something isn't "liked" by an individual it turns into a slanging match, followed by intervention by Admins to try and hold things together.

Tolerance of opinion, acceptance of difference, and the willingness to see what was intended to be written, all seem to have gone.

We now have entrenched arguments, bickering over the same points many times, and every thing taken at its most literal.

Folks seem to have forgotton that with freedom (of speech in this case) comes responsibility... mind you .. the word "responsibility" seems to be lacking in many areas .. not just this forum ... :(

OOF is still the most helpful and useful forum in existence, it's just no longer the most fun one.... IMHO.. :(

Yes Daz, the forum has changed... But in the time I've been a member it has gone through this "cycle" a couple of times ;)

There is still some banter but not as much as there used to be, although that might not be such a bad thing as my postcount takes enough of a beating as it is ::)

Hopefully it'll cycle again as it has in the past :y

It seems to go in waves Daz.  I joined around the same time as Lizzie, we were both a bit timid at first but were soon made to be felt welcome and joined in on most threads.  Then as others joined there were gentle changes in how conversations developed and after a few months I remember one of the original members saying how the forum wasnt the same anymore.

This probably goes through slight changes every 200 or 300 new members till we probly sit back and realise it isnt the same as was when we 1st joined.

Yes there are some very deeply involved threads, politics being one of them, but as mwntioned, if they are not your cup of tea then by pass them.

In all honesty there is a massive change, and allthough not the same  but in some ways better, TB and the Admin team if you remember nearly shut the forum dowsn through a lot of agro not too long since, I have an inkling that the odd dummy is still spat out at times but Amin/Mods have generally nukes the stuff I just hear comments about.

The thing is the forum is still alive and kicking.  Plus a lot of you kept telling me to get a life, so I have and haveing just taken home my new girlfriend (at 4am) it seems I am hardly spending time on here these days and this is my 1st real visit here in the 3 days or so, and now I need to get some sleep as I may be occupied again tomorrow afternoon rather than OOFing.  ::)

Personally I find the moral high ground/superior/better than you contest on here very distasteful. We all breath the same air and pay the same tax IMO. Keep the finger wagging out of it...?

I know the jokes restrictions on here keeps some away, Bob Dent is missing because of it afaict. Which is a shame. Mick Dundee has gone, admins rarely come out to play anymore. Which I find worrying, if they feel they can't enjoy their own forum then we're in trouble. And it is "theirs" I don't care what anyone says, regardless of the generous oof philosophy "it's your forum" approach. yet there seems to be a queue of people telling them how to run it, moaning and giving them grief.

Maybe it's over policed a little because of that? But having not seen the forum in it's early days it's difficult to say for me.

Certainly Found the place very dull since Xmas, starting to pic up now though.

Just some general thoughts, might well be talking 'dangle berries' again for all I know. ;D
