I used to smoke about 20 a day for close on 20 years. Then I had a health scare that I'll tell you all about.
One day (at the age of 36) I was talking as normal to my wife when I suddenly got the most fierce pins and needles in my left forearm along with a lack of movement. I started rubbing my arm and my wife asked me what was wrong. When I tried to reply I found that all that came out was a jumbled mash of sounds with no relation to the words I was trying to get out.
Fortunately for me I happened to be sitting right by the phone and with my right hand was able to dial 999 and pass the phone to my wife.
I think it took 8 minutes for the paramedic to arrive and by that time I had my speech back and the pins and needles had moved into my stomach, then into my leg while talking to the paramedic before finally disappearing altogether. Diagnosis was that I had a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) also known as a mini stroke and I've got to tell you it was the most frightening thing that's ever happened to me.
Needless to say that it gave me the motivation and the will power to give up smoking and I am now a completely smoke free zone.
