Legality of speed traps
« on: 30 March 2011, 09:55:13 »

Hi all,
We have a speed trap occasionally set up near here. What I do not understand is the 'dual standard' used by the operative.
As I understand it, all cameras are painted yellow, all police wear hi vis jackets and are fully visable. I have seen them on motorway bridges and police vehicle points, side of the road, etc.
Yet the speed trap here, the camera, on a tripod, is stood almost in the hedge, is manned by a person in black/dark civvies who makes himself as inconspicuous as possible by standing behind the telegraph pole and post box by where he has situated the camera >:(
The road bends to the left just after, and around this bend is a chapel/school/hall with a car park, which is where the police are. >:(
I believe this is a training ground as most of the officers are very young...sometimes up to nine officers in attendance, and up to four/five police cars parked .This is not a bus route, not an accident black spot, not a pedestrian area...in fact the pathway is set back from the road by about 15-20 ft. Lucky if 20 people a day use that stretch of path. 30 mph limit.
Why the dual standard !!!!!!!!!! :y
I have to say....when I arrived at work one day, they were outside my customers house. Again, using a telegraph pole as cover for the camera, although the police were visible in the distance. So I parked my van smack in front of the camera, quite legally, and got out, expecting a mouthful, but he had to move his camera further up the road, as did the police. Not easy as there were other vehicles parked which made his positioning difficult. Don't think they stayed long after.  ;D :y

Is it a speed camera or an ANPR camera though?  Given the numbers of officers and cars further round I suspect the latter.

Actually....why do our speed limits always go in increments of ten eg:- 30, 40, 50, 60
Why can't 35, 45, 55 be used.
Probably a logical reason somewhere

We have van here who parks up in the centre of a dualcarriageway, up a double kern, on double yellows. The next time I see it I'm taking a photo, will challenge him/her then make a formal complaint to the police.

"you can't break the law to enforce the law".

Or can you?

Is there a need for more limits?

I was driving in the US last week. I saw speed limits at 20,30,35,40,45,55,60,65 and 70 as far as I can recall. ::)

Got a bit tedious trying to remember what limit you were in so I took the "when in Rome" approach.  ;D

Reminds me, must log on to the Bucks CC website, there is a consultation for adjusting lots of speed limits within a 10m radius of Buckingham.

If you don't take part, you can't complain when they do something you disagree with...

..Just when they ignore the results of the consultation and then do something you disagree with.  >:(

Been there and done that with OFCOM, the CAA, local planning gibbons,...

As it happens, I agree with their proposals :o, so I wholeheartedly hope they do do it.

Yup, they are proposing to raise speed limits (basically reverting the changes they made 5 or 6 years ago) on country roads, except where they pass through villages.

Not sure I'd have reached those heady heights in the POS Chevrolet "so memorable I can't remember what it's called" I was driving. ;D

Small car with an Ecotec 2.2 with VVT under the bonnet and it still couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Really not sure how they manage it. ;D

You're so right with that Kevin! :y  When I first went to the US in 1990 we had a 4.5 litre engined Ford Crown Victoria.  It was a stunning six seater car with every conceivable electric gadget on or in it.  Beautiful, and such a smooth ride.  But try taking it up to any speed! ::) ::) ::)  It was a long distance car with speed as a secondary issue, with, I swear, the engine there to power all the toys!  0-60 mph was something like 10 minutes, or at least that how it seemed with either my ex or me driving it!! :D :D :D :D

The last car I hired there early last year was a big engined, 8 seater Toyota; now that moved, and yes I got to over 100 mph on a toll road :y :y :y  Bloody lovely it was :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-)

Oh, I went on a toll road as well, just as we were hurrying to get the the airport. Pulled up at a booth and the electric window failed. Had to get out of the car to pay the toll, much to the cashier's amusement. >:(
