LPG Devon & Cornwall
« on: 14 April 2011, 11:08:52 »

Going down to countryside week after next, be need some gas. I see Exeter has some, but with a return trip to Exeter from the campsite I have in mind being 220 miles, it won't leave much spare, given my MPG will be shyte as I will have a roof box too!  :o

Checking some LPG listing sites, this one looks spot on for my needs:

Jet - Gables Filling Station
Trevenan (A394)
north of Helston
Trevenen

http://www.getlpg.org.uk/stations/cornwall

Quick streetview suggests its there too:

http://goo.gl/maps/0muV

But these sites have been known to be well out of date, can anyone confirm this one is alive and well?

Try http://www.filllpg.co.uk Tunnie... It's updated by the members and is normally pretty accurate, although a bit clunky and slow :y

M5 nothing south of Bristol.

DEVON

BP Whitehouse (A30) are always busy - they have 2 pumps, I always fill up here both directions.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&saddr=50.738405,-3.956859&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=50.738468,-3.957229&sspn=0.002899,0.010986&ie=UTF8&ll=50.738468,-3.957229&spn=0.002899,0.010986

There are 2 in Honiton - same price. Easy to use.

Anyway we once did Hampsire/Dorset to Cornwall and stopped at Lyme Regis on way home. Loads of LPG on the Dorset to Exeter road - I used 2, saw 3 or so more.

WEST CORNWALL

The Penryn one has shut down - it was too expensive and was crap.

The one north of Helston (Gables) is the most usefull, cheapest in area, but it looks closed as they stopped doing petrol.

A few miles north at Longdowns there is an LPG converter who sells gas, but shut at weekends, and also slightly more than Gables, however that was last year.

There is one in the middle of Redruth but expensive - I think they are part of Opie Oils.

Carland Cross - never used it, don't often go that way when not towing.

Fraddon Jet - cheap but not a place to go when towing. I may try when we next do Newquay or Padstow.

Hayle not used yet.

I will recommend getting petrol though a lot cheaper than around here

Cheers all, much appreciated  :y

Looks like Carland Cross Shell looks spot on, its just 30 miles from this campsite I have in mind to use:

http://www.chycarne.co.uk/aboutus.html

Can easily make it down there on a tank, and gas up for my needs for the week  :)

Ruan Minor - Gables will be fine - no Jet name there now.

So what are you going to do there?

I can recommend some places if I know what you like doing.

And some pubs!

Try to avoid Cadgwith with the car - very narrow and tight lanes.

There is a good place for food near St Keverne

Photo opportunities - quite a few quarries on east side. See Porthoustock

Gardens - at least 3 near you worth visiting - easily make 8 or more.

Quite a few food places at Lizard 2 or 3 chippies AFAIR and a few cafes, pasties were not great last time I went, Lizard point cafe have some nice food and it might even be Chough time.

Cafes - a few around Mullion Meadows nice, Culdrose cafe is quite nice.

And some pubs!

Well we are hoping the weather is going to be reasonable first!

Not put any serious plans together really, just a couple of mates, some tents, BBQ and beer! - I liked reviews of the site above as they allow open fire pits  8-)

Any suggestions welcome  :y - Apart from Lands End we did not have much on the list  ;D

Hoping to find a pub or two near by the site, but any suggestions for days out would be good!

Our family is still in beach stage but still like exploring

Gardens - don't sniff they are brilliant around there.

Glendurgan *
Trebah *
Trevarno

* these two have their own beaches

Pubs - most are pretty good but look out for Cornish Rattler cider. There are some beautiful views around. I like The Ferry Boat Inn (Helford Passage). And until the fire Pandora Inn.

There is also Halzephron, 2 in Lizard, Cross something on main road to that area.

Walking - basically the coastal paths.

Sea Beaches - Kynance, Poldu, Gunwalloe, Maenporth all are nice.

Hire a boat to go on the Helford River or the River Fal.

There are a few small brewers which are open - need to look up on the internet for that I know Healeys are one.

National Maritime Museum Falmouth
Culdrose airbase does tours - very interesting.
Goonhilly earth station.
Camel rides!

Train rides, try St Erth to St Ives rather than drive in to St Ives.

Modelling (you may be into one of these)  2 good railway modelling shops and an excellent flying model aircraft shop in area.

Kite shop in Mullion

Roskillies near St Keverne do very nice milk for your tea and breakfast cereal. Their icecream is lovely and they also grow their own steaks :y In the summer they do barbeques 8-)

Buy the alcohol down there.

Lots of local brewers.

Lizard Cider barn has a good range of ciders and beer but is expensive.

Frankies shop in Lizard has a good range as well.

Helford cider is nice, Rattler in the pubs is nice.

Exploring

Do the following places in a trip, range from drive through to visit.

Mullion, Poldu, Gunwalloe, Helston, Portleven, then not much until Marazion, Penzance, Mousehole, Porthcurno (Minack Theatre), Lands End, north coast road to St Ives, then cross country back.

Other way

Cadgwith, St Keverne, Porthallow, Porthoustock, Gillan, Gweek, follow coast via Constantine, Mawnan, coast road to Falmouth.

King Harry Ferry to other side - St Maws, Mevagissy, Heligan

Cheers Martin  :y

Good tip on booze, just looked up one you suggested:

http://www.chycor.co.uk/tourism/lizard_cider_barn/lizard_cider_barn.htm

That is literally just around the corner from the camp site  8-)
