I see there is a chance that teachers are going on strike...
This makes me really mad
We wanted our grandson out for a week in June/July, but he is not allowed.....'detrimental to his education'
Buts its ok when teachers strike....its ok when after 6 weeks summer holiday, they have the Monday and Tuesday as training days......its ok when teachers don't turn up or they close the school when there is a bit of snow....its ok when they shut the school for polling day
Schools have just had two weeks off for 'Easter' but some schools are off again this Tuesday for teacher training.
None of the afforementioned is detrimental to education

As a school governor I sometime need to take time of work to attend these....they are anything but a day off!

my only question would be after having 6 weeks off in the summer why take extra days off for training  couldnt it be done during the holidays?

That would be down to the government...

They set the amount of teaching days per year.
So would be the same amount of days regardless of whether they 'look' to be in the holidays or in term time.

Now the quantity and length of school holidays - I do believe they are too long, but thats a separate debate.

I watched this on Sky News this a.m.

Seems to be three issues

1. Funding of schools, academies and their control. Changes to this.

2. Changes to pensions and time before you get it.

3. Envy from non teachers over their holidays and (perceived) short hours.

I don't understand the issues with item 1 so can't comment.

Item 2 as an older person actually I can understand. Fine if you are 25 and are told you have to work till you are 80. When you are young you think you will live forever. However when you are nearing 60 the thought of working for a few more years than you anticipated and perhaps getting less of a pension is a bit harder to swallow. If people in private sector jobs are envious of folk in public sector jobs and their pensions they could always have swapped sectors when making career decisions! What is the total package on offer ?

Item3 . I have always believed that teachers and children should have longer terms to prepare children for the real world. Changing to that would be tricky and could only be achieved over time. In the meantime that is part of their pay and conditions. A friend who was a teacher moved to a public sector job and was offered £2000 a year to move onto industry standard holidays (i.e. lose his school holidays). Needless to say he declined the cash.

Withdrawal of labour sounds less emotive.......The right of every working man and woman....

Pensions and retirement age have always been a bit of a gamble.  Like owning a house; it used to be a dead cert that you were quids-in when you took out a massive mortgage.  Used to be!
We're too used to getting our own way on working terms and conditions.

Based on what we have been through just recently, I'm surprised the education system even functions.
A very easy (and free) way towards putting things to rights would be to get rid of all the managers/pc malarky/health & safety, and go back to the way we did it 30 years ago IMO.

Nice idea but not much chance. It would be like saying stop playing computer games, watching TV and get outside and make your own entertainment, oh and you will be eating home made food in future not bought ready meals loaded with salt and fat.

I'm not talking abou getting rid of the technology, just the inane paperwork and bullcrap that is inflicted upon the teaching staff today.
