After getting all the requisite paperwork and permissions from the EA and the local canal I set my first trap this morning.  I went back this evening to find a bunch of signal crayfish in there volunteering to be my sunday lunch!

Amazing that there are so many!  If it carries on like this then there will be 40-50 in my cooking pot come sunday!

As well as being free it does the environment a favour as they are non-native 

Apparently they taste like lobster!  Yum yum

Tbh, it was very easy.  The EA permission and tags came through within days, the permission off the canal owners came through fairly quickly too.  I had seven in a box in my garage who will be joined by tomorrow's catch for sunday lunch

Sea food - the ONLY ones I eat are real fish basically COD and fresh Makerel - don't like fish much at all

Serve them with new pots, either boiled, drained then gently wamed in garlic & herb butter or roasted. If you've never roasted new pots you must, drizzle any cooking oil, garlic, herbs & season, snip some fresh chives etc.

   I'd serve with whole baby carrots & wilted spinach.

  Can't stand asparagus. I know it's a subtle flavour so works with seafood but it makes me gag...sickly!

  You can send a few crayfish up to the fens if you have too many!!! Guy.

Todays hual matched yesterdays, enough for a starter for me and the missus.  That said it is the start of the season and I only have one pot in action right now.  In a week I'll have all 5 going and I wil be getting fatter on crayfish

Crayfish yum very tasty. Your also doing the British Crayfish a favour, the signals carry a disease thats wiped out the indigenous population in many areas.

I've thought about this, remember watching it on show. 3 men on a boat? Griff Rhys Jones and some others?

They eat anything apparently, just bits of peperoni in a cage did the trick it think.

Only thing would trouble me is how do you knock them out? Remember Griff attempted to take it out behind the head, but it was hard work, and the others got spooked.

Assume best way is into boiling water?  :-/ 

Thames is not far away from me, guess it can be done there? Does not have to be a canal?

Did the paperwork cost anything?

Also just remembered I go over a canal on my cycle home, by Boston Manor Park, should be some good spots there to go put a cage that won't be disturbed, or get trap nicked.

After what I've seen at my friends place (Teddington Lock), I wouldn't want to touch anything that has come from the Thames.

Paperwork was free I didn't even need a rod license.  And yes I make sure I hidethe trap and line well.  Even though it is illegal for somebody else to interfere with the trap I just don't trust the public not to mess with it.
