Re-sealing bath
« on: 28 June 2011, 20:18:21 »

So in my flat I need to re-seal the bath, a crack has developed around the edge, where the bath meets the tiles. I need to stop water getting in.

I was thinking of using something like this:

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10548844&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C{9372013}/categories%3C{9372031}/categories%3C{9372100}/specificationsProductType=sealants&tmcampid=4&tmad=c&ecamp=cse_go&CAWELAID=396930033

Is it best to chip out the old stuff with something like a small chisel? Or is it ok just to clean it up and use that stuff above?  :-/

Any suggestions welcome  :y

Plastic/acrylic bath or pressed steel :question

Plastic  :y

Thats much cheaper! Think there is one near me too.

Best to remove old stuff or just go over top?

That is one mighty  big crack.I think i would investigate a little further if that has moved to that extent or was it just badly fitted and the old stuffs fallen out ?

Clean as best you can. Run two strips of masking tape, one along the tiles, the other along the bath leaving a suitable gap between both strips. Fill bath 3/4 full then apply sealant in one continuous application. Wet finger and smooth off. Wait about 5 minutes then carefully remove tape and drain bath

Badly fitted.... quite a few little sections where it shows poor fitting. Shame, its good stuff but look like it would poorly put together by previous owner  :(

Looks badly fitted and not been sealed as per guidelines for acrylic baths

Perfect. Cheers Rob  :y

Good point on 3/4 bath, get the weight in there, and after it sets a little it will rise as it goes lighter! Did'nt think about that!

I'll post an after photo  :)

I would still remove the bath side and see if the floor has rotten and sunk taking the bath with it. Raise via the feet if needed? Then re seal.

Reminds me I really need to re-seal my bath after it dropped a bit.. in my case it really is because I'm a fat bastard, though  :-[

Thats what i was thinking as it does look like it has shifted quite a lot and if that is so then it will continue to move however well you do the mastic now. Also maybe the bath has not been fixed in position properly as there would normally be a couple of brackets holding it to the wall and maybe the legs not bolted up very well.Definitely something not right there.
