Sciatica............
« on: 28 July 2011, 22:19:01 »

Right, for the past 3 years, i have suffered sporadic periods of Sciatic pain. Usually last for about 2 to 3 weeks, total agony but cant afford to take time off work so i plod along and suffer in silence (apart from walking around looking like i have something stuck up my rear lol). Painkillers dont work and i cant really take anything too strong as otherwise i would probably have to take time off work due to not being able to drive.
Have read about and heard about an operation but it does not gaurantee to be permanent and have also read that acupuncture can be a great help and sometimes cure.
I am quite a physical person and dont like to be sat around for too long and typically, the most comfortable place to be is sat in the Miggy (but cant really stay in her till the back gets better lol)
Anyone suffer or used to suffer that has some good advice? The missus has said vitamin b6 helps and i did have a couple of sessions on her power plate which was also reccomended but that has caused unimaginable amounts of pain and i really cant be arsed with the pain anymore lol. Got quite a high pain threshold but it really limits what i can do with the 3 kids lol (i can normally be found having spacehopper races with them lol)

Hmmm... An ongoing saga for me unfortunately ::) ::) You need to have it investigated and perhaps try physio/osteopath/chiropractor.

If the procedure you are talking about is the injections into the joints and nerve root blockers then they may or may not work. I had them (about 15 in all :o) about 4 weeks ago to try and resolve the problem I've had since December. Unfortunately it hasn't worked (long term) for me, but during the procedure the surgeon spotted a "Pars Defect" which is, essentially, a broken bone so it was quite likely that the injections wouldn't be a long term cure :'( Those that saw me at the Lakes will know that my back wasn't fantastic then, but I had only had the injections 8 days before the meet. It did improve and by the Wednesday after the meet (so 2 weeks after the injections) I was off the painkillers and planning to visit my company doctor the following week to return to work (he won't let me work whilst taking painkillers because of the risk of drowsiness whilst operating a crane ::))

Unfortunately it was not to be and it got progressively worse over a couple of days... It's now as bad as it has ever been and I'm staring down the barrel of a double spinal fusion (6-12 weeks recovery :o) and also medical redundancy from work :(

Anyway... I found the chiropractor (who also did acupuncture) was beneficial, but not for much longer than a few hours to a day. Like I said, you need it investigating so they can get to the bottom of why the sciatic nerve keeps getting inflamed ;)

Well, believe it or not, it all started when i was taking a roof out of an xr3i for a mate at his work. Was quite a task to get it out but got a backache a few hours later. Since then, i went to the docs once and he diagnosed Sciatic nerve inflammation.
Since then, i have had 3 flareups and apart from cododamoyl (sp) which only works for the first couple of days till the body gets used to it, i just plod on, trying the age old philosophy of work makes it better (it does not, but keeps the pennies coming in) Not quite sure why it comes back although the latest installment was down to lifting an old ladies case from the top rack of our luggage racks which my supervisor had kindly put there.
Thing is, i cant afford to take time out from work as it means i wouldnt be able to see the missus (she lives in Poole, i live in Bristol) and i run a non lpg 3L lol so time out aint an option lol.

Mine all started off pouring the third cup of tea from a teapot :o :o Although I had just cleared 8" of snow from my drive and the neighbours ::) ::)

I'm on a right concoction of drugs... 3 different painkillers and anti-inflamatories.

You need to get referred (or go privately) to a back clinic when it next flares up and get it investigated ;)

Fortunately I'm still getting paid... But that ends in a months time, hence the medical redundancy looming

i suffer from that an used to work through it just like you, didnt help as i was working in agony all day. i have degenerated disc disease and spodylitis which i had 3 injections in the muscles in my neck in may which took the pain away immediatly. and its still going strong. as for my lower back i have noticed that since i have been staying at my x wifes for the last 5 weeks i have had no trouble with my lower back so have realised that its my sofa that is causing the most problem. have a think about your bed and the way you sit, if you slump or sit awkwardly can all have a bad effect causing the pain to be more intense. i was told i need plates and botox injections in my spine but the consultant i see in may basically laughed at it. havent had no sciatica or back pain for weeks now and i feel great for the 1st time in a few years.

Well, thats the thing Richie. Our brand new buses are set up so the correct sitting position is easily attained (plus you cant see the speedo unless the seat is set just right lol) and my bed is more on the firm side (ideal for back support) and finally, the Miggy is an elite so more designed for comfort (unlike the mv6 seats for example)
Being ex military and working in a company that bleats health and safety and correct lifting till you get sick and tired of it, i always lift and move correctly. Had scans and such, no problems with any degenerative issuses and it literally is just the occasional flare up which causes the almost unbearable pain.

Bootie, there comes a time when manning up only goes so far lol. Walking round like you have some kind of device stuck up your rear does tend to not only be rather annoying but also does make you look rather weird haha  ;D

Bootie, stop having a go at the ex-forces, I am one of them too and comments like that are hard to see the funny side of, well intended or not. Please show some degree of respect for those who did their best for their country!
rbrueford...I fully sympathise with you, welcome to my world of pain. I have suffered like it for over ten years now and even biting the bullet and getting on with life (even walking like a crippled duck at times) is getting harder.
I am on high doses of weekly morhine patches which barely dull it. As for steroid injections, you can only have so many before their benfit turns into making it worse and causing more complications.
My next step is to try what some friends have tried with lots of success and that is traditional chinese remedies. I feel that I have nothing left to lose and if our traditional ones do not work then I will try anything going even though it will have to be at my own expense cos I am not in Wales or Scotland. :-[

Thanks for that link Richie.
It's been recommended to me by my GP but the cost implications of something that may or may not work have made me a bit wary.

OP - I'd look at chiroprcator/osteopath rather than physio.  Physio has a tendancy to treat the symptoms where as the others will look to find the route of the problem and address that.
Good luck with it.

Accupuncture is not readily available on the NHS although you do find the odd GP who dabbles and I have had some excellent results from 3 small sessions a week apart, a typical from hardly walking to running recovery.

I am now a bit of an accupuncture junkie, and not once has it failed to at least aleiviate symptoms or sort out the problem.

Make sure you get one who is properly registered :y
