Blue Badge Question?
« on: 01 August 2011, 15:40:29 »

Our son is registered disabled and has a Blue Badge.
My car is registered as a disabled vehicle.

As we have 2 cars the badge gets swapped about frequently and is occasionally left in the car that he's not in.  As my car is registered disabled, can I legitimately park in a disabled bay without displaying the blue badge when he is with me as my tax disc clearly states that it's a registered disabled vehicle?
I haven't done but the thought crossed my mind earlier when the only bay left in an over full car park was a disabled one.

Nope.

Disability tax exemption and the blue badge are classed as two very different things.

I note somebody even got done for having the blue badge the wrong way up!

No idea on the rules and regs, but heard on local news that they were having a clampdown on abuse in these parts.

So if you're unsure, probably best not to risk until you know for definate :y

figured as much but don't know for sure.

have read this :

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/MotoringAndTransport/Bluebadgescheme/DG_171251

shows you cant get 'done' in a private carpark, so in this instance I could have done and argued the toss if needed

i think you can, however you can still get done/clamped etc but then are able to get the boot off or fine taken off when you provide the blue badge and/or paperwork. so if you really need to park there do it, but you may have hassle to prove you can like paying for the clamp to be removed then having to get your money back, pretty much just has to be displayed.

Beware as privately owned parking areas are a different matter:

Quote
What about off-street car parking?
The parking concessions provided under the Blue Badge Scheme only apply to on-street parking. They do not apply in off-street car parks such as those at supermarkets. The conditions of use of off-street facilities are entirely down to the individual car park owner or operator to determine and these should be clearly displayed at the entrance. You should note that badge holders are not automatically exempt from charges in these car parks. If in doubt, ask an attendant

So its dependent on the owner of the private off road parking and the rules they display and you can get done (e.g. they make state on disabled spots - parking only when a valid disabled parking badge is displayed).

I note many councils are now charging for blue badge parking.

A good few of our local car parks charge for disabled spaces anyway.
I'm not too bothered about paying or the large spaces, it's often about proximity when he's tired or safety as his hazard perception is none existent (and a deciding factor in his getting a blue badge).
I don't think charging blue badge holders is the best idea ever as it just makes more of them use double yellows instead.

Exactly, My Father got a ticket last year on holiday, for parking in a council carpark on the seafront, he put his disabled badge on display and got a ticket. It appeared that carpark didnt except blue badges.

So I told him, next time, check the charges board when he drives in, if they don't except blue badges, drive out again and park on double yellow's. Which he says he will now do. :y

swmbo is a blue badge holder, miggy carries a buggy in the back nearly 24/7 we find the best option is double yellows so long as we cause no undue obstruction done this for years without any problems.

You must display your blue badge if parking in a disabled bay.

In a private car park you must display your blue badge, if parking in a disabled parking bay, failure to display may get you a ticket, you can however NOT be clamped, anywhere if displaying a blue badge, there are some dodgy places mind that I would not necessarily want to test this, if nothing else you could be stuck for some hours while you sort it out.

As said, do not assume that you are exempt from car parking charges, read the signs, you could get a ticket.

Also remember that it is an offence to park in a loading bay, many blue badge holders assume you can, you can not and should receive a ticket.

Too many blue badge holders park dangerously / causing a hazard, think about where you park.... :y

Yes sir! :y

lol.  I'm always aware of how and where I park, it's my pet hate when blue badge holders take the mick.

I've not parked in a disabled bay without his badge it was more a 'what if' as the car is registered disabled.

I know it can't be clamped if it's registered disabled as the DVLA clamping men came out to clamp it for not being taxed and then realised they couldn't as it was a disabled vehicle. (I'd bought it from Northampton, under the impression that it was taxed, only to find it wasn't.  So ended up driving it home with no tax, must have been camera checked on the way and there followed a visit from the obnoxiously, ignorant DVLA twonks, who nearly got the blunt end of my maglite to the nuts >:()
I try to use carparks where possible. :y
