Astra LPG running costs - worth it?
« on: 13 September 2009, 16:53:04 »

Mixed driving...

Astra does 26 miles per gallon on gas  = at 48.9p per litre this works out at 8.5p per mile

____

Astra does 42 miles per gallon on petrol - at 106.9p/litre this works out at 11.6p per mile

______

saving on LPG is 3.1p per mile

____

Therefore

Every 300 miles, you save £9.30

Every 500 miles you save 15.50

Every 1,000 miles you save £31

Every 10,000 miles you save £310

Every 100,000 miles you save £3100

__

This isn't taking into account that with LPG, things like the spark plugs need chaning 4 times as often, etc...

Worth it? You decide....

Those are certainly interesting figures James, I'd always thought LPG offered a greater saving than that. I'd wager a 2.0 dti overall would be the same to run, or dare I say even even cheaper. How come it only achieves 26 mpg on LPG? I must admit I'm totally ignorant of information when it come to LPG.

Another off-put for me with LPG is the boot space lost to the tank, and it costs around £1.5k to have converted so you need to do a lot of miles to get the money back.

Personally I steer clear.

might as well get a V6 Omega  ::)  ;D

Something i may have to consider at some point, if i do get offered a perm job, i will be doing a LOT of miles. So will have to go LPG or Diesel route.

I thought you should be getting better than 26 mpg on gas, if you can get 42mpg on petrol.

Something's not right. Are these both observed MPGs, based on the same type of driving, or out of the book?

42mpg on petrol sounds too good to be true, and 26mpg on gas is poor. My MV6 is doing 22-23 MPG on gas.

Did not know it was that bad, so at best 44-46mpg running costs wise  :-/  :(

Kinda makes a 2.2 DTi Omega a better option, as 50mpg is achievable.  :-/

Hiya Kev,

40 to 42 mpg is based on filling up, doing a run, and filling back up - calculating the distance done and the fuel used.

Likewise with LPG - I've been sure to use the same pump - and I consistently calculate 26mpg with my usual driving on LPG (29 if more steady).

I have it in my head that it used to do about 32 on gas.

It is running a treat - I only wonder if maybe the worn ring(s) is contributing to extra consumption?

Kevin I also get well over 40 mpg on open road with my 2.2 mig.
But that much difference with gas of only 26mpg sounds definitely somethhing is not right.
The consumption should be higher but not more than 10 to 15%

What size engine is that?
you should be getting a hell of a lot more mpg than that mate,
At that rate you would have to drive about 500k miles without changing anything just to get your money out of it, or am I going wrong here somewhere? :-/

Except a 2.2 DTi doesn't quite go as well. ;)
