Sticky thread regarding "Text speak"
« on: 10 June 2007, 17:23:01 »

Maybe this is just a pet hate of mine, but I really don't like reading through posts that are full of "Text language"

"my m8 sed dat i shud 4get i dun it"... etc

apart from the fact that it personally annoys me, I also find it hard to follow the threads when they're written in grammar that poor.

I remember once we had a sticky thread asking people not to use "text language" - but I can't see that thread anymore.

I'm beginning to think we need to bring it back - the state of the grammar in some posts is getting worse!

Of course, I'm not discriminating against anyone who genuinely finds grammar difficult, I just want to clamp down on this bloody lazy text speak that our society seems so full of.

Hear hear! Text language is so lazy. The reason that we need good grammar, spelling and punctuation is to aid communication. In a forum like this where there is a lot of technical information, any impediment to communication is not only annoying but could be dangerous. I hope you make a difference. Having said all that, I bet I've made a spelling mistake or a grammatical error in this post :-[

Only you Broocie -only you. ;D

Seriously, I think this is something that needs enforcing a tad more.

Although it would be nice to reduce text speak as much as possible on this forum - the sad fact is, it's becoming a part of everyday life. :(

Look on eBay, I bet you one in three adverts is written in text speak - and it puts me off the product straight away!

I understand it would be a tad difficult to enforce - the last thing I'd want to do is discriminate or offend dyslexic people and such.

But seriously, are you saying we should moderate more, or stick with the very light moderation as we do currently  :-/

Why not just edit http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1164311267
and add a bit in there about using English only?

Not sure that is the place for it.  Maybe a 'Rules' sticky may be better, though I don't like the word 'Rules', and will break them purely out of spite ::)

Yuh m8,,,, u shld ban d ppl dat use da txt spk. ;D

Serious note - I think it's a difficult one to address. I think the only real clear way of doing it would be to make the message clear that text speak isn't encouraged. I like the idea of rules thread... but as you say, I don't like the word rules either. Maybe "Code of conduct" or something...
