"My Naff Code Reader" (genuine version) query...
« on: 03 March 2010, 21:42:33 »

I'm in a position to buy myself an official "My Naff Code Reader" but have a query as to the OS it'll run on, no amount of googling has answered my query! I don't want to run it off a laptop for 2 reasons... 1) I hate them, always have. Completely un-upgradable and extremely fragile. 2) the size of most cheap laptops these days are still far too large.

Now I have a Netbook that's on a cut down version of Debian Linux, lovely little thing that I use for tinternet upstairs. Will "My Naff Code Reader" run on Linux or do I need to run a WinVM (or equivalent)? The processor in this netbook won't accept windows as it's a MIP's processor. Would I be better changing the netbook for a windows based one? I can get a 2nd hand Eee PC701 with Win7 cheap enough but it's a 10.5" and the CnM I have already is only a 7".

Baffled? I am ;D ;D

TB uses a laptop that is dedicated to the Tech2 .. is it not worth doing the same for the "My Naff Code Reader" ??

That's what I'm planning but I need it to be small and fairly tough as it'll live in the car hence the netbook idea, but mine is a linux based machine so not sure if "My Naff Code Reader" will run on it.

Hiya Lee, the Toshiba Toughbook looks a good bet for carrying in the car IMHO. I know it's a bit larger than you want/need, but you will struggle to find anything smaller that isn't flimsy. Also, I believe the "My Naff Code Reader" software is PC based so almost certainly Windows only (but don't quote me). AFAIK, it will work on win 2000 through to Vista (in my own experience), but I don't know about any other O/S TBH. :y

Its Windows only.  It relies on a USB driver that will mean any kind of virtualisation (VMWare etc) or emulation (WINE etc) won't work.  It will also probably won't work on 64bit Windows, as not seen a 64bit driver.

Not sure if a netbook would have the sheer grunt needed to run it, as those Atom class processors are pretty naff to be honest.

Yes, but then so is "My Naff Code Reader" ;D
The Toughbooks are as upgradeable as any other lappy, and if used mainly for diagnostics, they are more than fit for the task. ;) :y
