Someone makes a puncture repair kit that allows you to fit a rubber plug into the hole (assuming you can find it). It was recommended by a friend who runs a tyre fitting centre and knows his onions.

As said, a blowout or a puncture you don't immediately notice will leave you without a serviceable tyre to repair, so whatever you do you run the risk of being stranded.

Also, most breakdown cover won't cover you for this unless your car has no facility to carry a spare wheel!

The difference is the sidewalls, so no fast deflation.  But do need to get top tyre place asap once alarm gone off.

The side walls are what give RFT equipped cars such an awful ride, though in BMW's defence, they soften the suspension to help with this (at expense of handling - ultimate drivers car claim now = tosh).

Some cars, I think Jags and mercs, have an inflatable spare, with a compressor.

Personally, I like the idea of a proper spare.

I don't find them uncomfortable at all, I was actually saying that to the mrs the other day and it handles beautifully.

My car has no spare. Run flats.
spawn of satan ;D

Reminds me of a BMW-owning colleague who had a puncture on the M3. Reads manual:

"Run flat tyres. Drive at 20mph (or whatever) to tyre depot"

She toddles off up the hard shoulder of the M3.

Traffic Police: "WTF are you doing?"
Colleague: "It's OK, it's a run flat tyre"
Traffic Police: "It's not OK. You're going no further"
Colleague: "But, But..."
Traffic Police: "Do you have breakdown cover?"
Colleague: "Hmm. Company car. Pass"
Traffic Police: "We'll call out a truck"
Colleague: <Reaches for Vaseline> (Standard equipment on a BMW, fortunately.) ;D

Why go on the hard shoulder? They can drive at 50mph with a run flat. Well even quicker if you watch 5th gear's test  ;D A woman driver explains all that mind you (runs, ducks and hides for cover).

The point being: The performance of the tyre is irrelevant if the Police won't let you drive yourself off the motorway with it. You're up the creek without a paddle just as you would be with a normal tyre so you might as well forego the disadvantages of the run-flat anyway.
