Cadillac Catera 3.0 Engine
« on: 21 April 2010, 21:36:20 »

I may be off to the USA for a short period in a few months, and I'll be provided with a vehicle...so I decided it'd have to be a Catera. I'll probably take a VX grill with me and some Vauxhall badges  ;D
I know it has a 3.0 engine, but it appears to look just like the 3.2 DBW...see link below to a Catera that was for sale on ebay.com

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-Cadillac-Catera-Used-AS-IS-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ320517343863QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item4aa0528a77#v4-36

It has the longer plenum and coil packs etc, so did GM use the 3.0 engine and make it DBW?
I've never had or even driven the older non DBW Omega's so really don't know what the engines look like, only know the DBW engines.

You'd have thought that it would be rather pointless to make the 3.0 DBW when they were already creating the 3.2 DBW engine...I wonder why they bothered?
It'll be interesting to compare the Catera to the Omega.

 ;D not quite Del
Don't think I'd fancy selling cars in the USA, just going over for a short period and a vehicle will be provided so I just said how about a Cadillac Catera...they did sound a bit puzzled  :D

I only saw one when I was there about 4 or 5 yrs ago.  Cateras weren't exactly popular in the States

yes - they're a breed all of their own the Yanks. Mind you, it does all kinda make sense in America. Personally, I love 'em and can't get enough of the place. Have serioously considered moving a couple of times.

you're barmy to be getting a Catera, they're almost identical to Omega ( I did a lot of work for GM at Millbrook when they were being introduced ) Go for a Pontiac GTO instead - it'll still be familiar to you. It's basically a re-badged Holden Commodore, mine is very close to Omega, but it is a 2000 MY car, before they were sold in the states.

What you have to consider is that the fuel and emmision requirements are a bit different also OBDII was mandatory there before here.

So they have a modified inecjtion setup with coil per plug and electronic throttle control....long before the 3.2 and 2.6 were out......about 1998 from memory it arrived. You can see changes to the 3.0 and 2.5 castings at the stage they were introduced with an extra web in the plug hole area of the heads to accept the securing bolt for the coil packs.

Note, they have a lower compression ratio than us
