Tips for tools
« on: 22 April 2010, 10:11:23 »

Was thinking of getting a few tools to help me do same work on the car myself give Mark a Rest ;D ;D.

Have a small tool box with some good bits in spanners up to 17mm i think.
Looking at jack, stands, to help with oil and fillter changes. What other size spanners would be good to get and other tools for diy jobs.

Also anytips at where to get them at a good price. :y

Thanks all

for spanners and sockets, has to be Halfords 150 Piece set, its very good, has everything you need for Omega. Its worth getting some 3/8th to 1/2 adaptors though, spanners little thin but other wise excellent, and good price when its on offer of £99, i have a trade card someware that can get it for £95 instead of £150 retail...

For stands look at ones with a large flat Y type surface of the stand, the standard machine mart ones are rubbish and dig into chassis rail

Halfrauds 150 pce kit is a pretty reasonable starting point - when it's on special offer at 99 quid. Only a madman would pay the full asking price.  ;D

It will duplicate your spanners but contains pretty much everything else in terms of hand tools and it avoids a lot of shopping around just to buy everything in one box!

Failing that, I'd say you need:

1/4" drive socket set
3/8" drive socket set
Set of male and female torx sockets and bits
1/2" socket set and 18" breaker bar if you're going to tackle heavier jobs such as suspension work

In addition to either of the above:

Torque wrench that will cover down to 8nm (halfords Pro one is reasonable)
Heftier torque wrench if you're going to be doing suspension work, etc.

This is a pretty reasonable set of torx sockets if you've already got a socket set or two:
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pro151-29-pce-metric-socket-set/path/torx-spline-and-star-tools

VAT free days at Machine mart coming up if you know someone who has an invite. :y

Best to buy the basics, do a few jobs and add to the collection as you need to rather than rush out and buy a load of tools only to find you didn't need some of them, IMHO.  :y

Oh, and avoid folding or riveted axle stands. Get the type with a welded frame as you don't want them folding up with the car on top and you underneath. :o

I have a set of old Halfords ones which are fine. They are fairly old but these look similar: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_215964_langId_-1_categoryId_165727

Stands I use
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_254019_langId_-1_categoryId_165727

been very pleased with em, loads of ratchet steps, no messing with pins.

and a jack, finally bought one of these, thought I dont need one that big to begin with, soon regretted the decision, so bought a better one...

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks

again, another vote for the Halfords kit as a good starting point...

Sump plug TX45
Filter cap 3/8" square or 24mm ring spanner. A 24 mm socket, which is in most cases with 1/2" drive is too large, you can not put it on with any handle on it...

Not got the Helfrauds socket set, but, I do have the Helfrauds Ratchet Axle stands, they are really nice to use..  As said, no pins to piddle about with, just lift the support, let it go and away you go....

A decent set of ramps are always handy... Easier for the oil change, but make sure you can get your car on forwards, My front bumper only just clears the ramp...
