Watching the for sale ads of late i've seen a lot of very acceptable looking motors get canned, and I think i'm now close to that point, but the question is when would you give in.

I have a '99 2.5 Elite (mini), owned it for the last 8yrs and it has been rock solid, very rarely letting me down. The problem is now the MOT is soon up and I know it needs work, front shocks went soft a few months back, self levelling compressor no longer kicks in, had a new cat back exhaust a year ago but it sounds like the cats are making a noise, it has a tick that sounds like exhaust manifold, it leaks from the pipe behind the inlet manifold, 1 door strap has gone, it no longer flashes the hazards when the alarm triggers, ABS ECU went 2 weeks back (doh!) and to cap it whilst it looks ok from a distance almost every panel has some sort of dink from the peons at ASDA's car park. Oh and it will be due a cambelt change within a few K miles.

I can spare £5-600 this month for repairs if needed but the fact is i'm thinking should I just give up and use that money to buy an interim vehicle? I kind of have to decide inside the week as I need a legal car to get to work.

We seem to get attached to our cars, but if you have had it for 8 years you know it well, maybe worth doing the odd jobs and keep it going..

I would say the first question you have to ask your self is are you thinking this because i fancy the idea of a new car, if the answer is yes then £5-600 would get you quite a nice omega with 12 months mot even in to a facelift if they take you fancy. If the answer is no then start looking on here for parts and ebay, i've just bought a pair of new front shocks from ebay for my dad's omega, £78, i've seen the air pumps go for about £25 on here. If you go down the road of keeping it than put a list of parts together and get it on here and we will try and help you

This is my problem, I have this feeling i'm becoming irrationally attached to it, prior to this car I would change every year. I have at least suppressed the strange urge I had last week to buy an Alfa........

I think the ads on here are part of the problem, I could spend 850 on my car and it still wouldn't be a patch on filterdal's recently advertised GLS. Deep down I do regret not holding out for 3.0 so maybe I am just fancying a change. I have a couple more days before i'm forced into deciding, i'm sure something will help me decide.

Buy mine for £400, spend £200 on it for odds and ends, and you'll have a pretty mint 3.0 Elite.

If only you knew how tempting that offer was! My problem at the moment is I must buy something dependable with a couple of months MOT minimum.
