windscreen companies.
« on: 07 July 2010, 11:20:12 »

Ive been phoning around getting quotes for a replacement screen & came across a company called "autofit windscreens" in Notts, they have quoted £90 which sounds very reasonable, i just wondered if anyone has used this company before, also is there anything i should watch out for if i get them to fit one for me?. :-/

seems an odd price? far too cheep for fitting a new screen, but a bit steep on excess if its going through your insurance, which is easiest and cheapest route imo.

Look out for goo on the a pilar covers inside, remove first? If there is rust on the metal frame on the metal supporting edge you want them to treat that idealy, it can swell up discolour the black surround and eventually crack the glass.

Generally speaking there have been some horror storys with replacement, Autoglass seem most reliable as a rule, anywhere else a good job seems rare afaict.

Price is not to far off (I got quoted about 110 a few years ago from a trusted independent).

A screen for an Omega (pattern) is about 60 quid.....so 30 quid to fit at about an hours work.

Thing is, I bet it does not include new plastic channels for the edge of the glass (which will no doubt get broken as the old screen is removed).

if you can get a proper insured glass man to remove a screen and wop one in for 30 snoots you have struck lucky.

i have been paying 50 quid and i thought thats cheap for pound notes.

this is a conversation i had recently with Autoglass.

Me... Hi i need a rear window glass for one of the rear doors for a 03 VX Combo.
Autoglass.... yep £580 plus vat
Me................. Swoon.

i got one brand new genuine from Lookers VX for 80 quid inc Vat and bonded it in meself with a 5 quid tube of tiger seal.

theres some right robbers in the Glass game and Autoglass are the No1.  ::)

i reckon using the bloke i have used for years and getting a screen from my local Vauxhall Specialists (Roadrunners aka Happy Steves  :D) it would cost me 80 ish sovs for a second hand screen pulled out a breaker and fitted to a car.
thats 2 screens out and one in. I reckon a second hand probably genuine screen would be about 20ish sovs and 60ish to bung in.

so 90 sovs for a new one fitted is a good deal imo  :P

I suspect that's because Autoglass have the Lion's share of the insurance market so don't need to do cheap deals. On the plus side when I had mine done under insurance they wheeled out one of those nice UV screens so I can't complain.

Are you going through insurance?

My excess was £75 but they included new trims (which came in a huge box!)

It's worth noting that although Insurance companies say that a winscreen repair/replacement will not affect your ncb's, a note is made on your record that you have claimed. More Than show this as a claim on your proof of no claims bouns when you re new.
