Beware of cowboys and follow OOF advice!
« on: 19 August 2010, 17:50:21 »

Just spent the last 7 hours doing what was supposed to be a simple cambelt change.  Ok, a small portion of that was a slight schoolboy error on my part but look at what was found:

Also the plenun O rings and EGR manifold have been sealed with instant gasket so spent some time getting that off and cleaned.  Finished off with the breathers and the ICv cleaned.  Car now runs sweet  :y

I am not going to say which user this car belongs to but I spent a long time sorting out problems caused by shoddy mechanics, supposedly professionals.  He got the car off someone on here but they didn't do this work, we worked out it was a garage at the time of 3 owners ago.  I will try and find out which garage it is and warn others on here never to go there, it's in Wales I think.

Just goes to show that if you aren't sure about the cambelt from the history then get it done.  I think from now on I will be checking cambelts on all omegas I purchase....

Anyway, now on to my car  ;D

Those bolts give me nightmares Gaffers!! :o :o :o :o

The number I have manage to drop when working on the top end of the engine :'( :'( :'( :'(  Still I have always made an effort to recover everyone, and your picture clearly shows why!! ::) ::) ::)  You obviously have just managed to stop a potential disaster taking place with that one.

Before now I have found tools (garages, not mine) down the sides of the engine, which of course is a bonus!! ;D ;D

After I had my Cavalier serviced at the Vx dealer once, I got a phone call from the service manager asking if I could check the engine bay as the the mechanic dropped a spanner, meant to retrieve it later and then forgot. I explained that I doubted it would still be there as I had done about 75 miles since picking it up but had a look anyway and wedged under the airbox was a Snap On 17mm spanner! I returned it of course but that was before I knew how expensive Snap On stuff was!

It was not mine but someone else on here.  He was assured that the cambelt had been done, which I think it had but what a job.  I think a spare bolt was used in place of the wedge and then forgotten about and they obviously forgot to remove the aux belt tensionner thus snapping the case.  Either the case or the bolt had started to shred the belt but the car has done a lot of miles since the belt was last changed (less than 40k though)

The owner had heard some whining inside the cambelt cover and was not convinced it had been changed.  Good job he didn't just ignore it.

The bit which really disgusted me was the use of instant gasket all over the plenum O rings and the egr manifold.  Thats amateur at best.

A couple of months I did my first ever cambelt change - which is quite a nervy thing.

Imagine my annoyance when I discovered that the previous change of belt etc was done by someone who decided only to use 2 of the 3 bolts on the backing plate.  >:(

The sad thing is, most of our cars have a lot of Vx service history followed on by other garages.

Me thinks that history is not really worth the paper it was written on  :-/
