Theoretical engine question...
« on: 10 October 2010, 21:04:47 »

...I've had a car in with an X30XE and a failed cambelt. Actually the bolt in the top belt guide snapped from, what I can tell anyway, not being tightened correctly. What would the advantages be between fitting a pair of X30 head to fitting Y32 heads?

I'm tempted to break it but just wanted some opinions first as this car is spotless and has only covered 82K since new!

Nothing, the combustion bowls are the same cc (the lower compression of the 3.2 is achieved using a slightly shorter piston)

That'll do me then, thanks Mark :y

Not that I will go to that length, but the implication is a bit more power by fitting 3l pistons to 3.2 engine?

Ah, talk of pistons TB is my scene! 8-) 8-)

So if you fit 3 litre pistons on top of 3.2 piston rods, you should get the longer stroke, higher compression, and a greater area of cumbustion in an enlarged chamber? :-/ :-/

didn't i read that there's a small difference in bore size....    ???   so depending on which way round it is....     one lot would get stuck, and the other lot would slap like a barsteward?

Ah, yes, if bore is different, that buggers my chances of ruling the universe ;D

Yep, 3.2 has a bigger bore. ::)

Doesn't mean there aren't suitable pistons around but if you wanted more compression skimming a shedload off the head and/or the block would probably be the path of least resistance.

As its a V, can't skim much off heads, unless to can build new coolant bridge?

Ahh, yes. Would have to be careful there.

Actually, given chrisgixers dilema, if you need more power than the 3.2, there is only one real option for an Omega....

I think MaxV6 blew that idea out. Shame, as it seemed like an idea ;D

I don't know, actually. Then again, 3.2 has a longer stroke so would probably have shorter rods anyway. :-/
