What do you think of the Tigra 1.6.

I have just been offered a 1999 for peanuts for my partner. Engine sounds sweet and don't look in bad condition but was wondering what to look out far!

Honest opinion, I don't know anything about them, but if it's cheap and in good nick, and you need it, who cares what people think!

I never liked them personally and especially after test driving one.  I was very underwhelmed!! ;)

It's a Corsa in pretty clothes IIRC, so that's not surprising ;)

On the up side, it's a Corsa in pretty clothes so one imagines it would be mechanically decent (ISTR they had a spate of engine problems at some point in their production run though?)

Well the rear spoiler needs to go and the 17s it's on appear a little bit too big but when I tried it out it still goes like hell for it's age. The engine sounds great and body is tidy for it's age so I thinks it's worth what they want. It's almost like driving a go cart lol

Read this Parkers Review.  It re-inforces what I felt about the car after driving it:

Great fun and reliable, pretty cheap to and quite well screwed together.

And they handle better than the sporty Corsas.

Seem ok Imo, far far too small for me, I have to stick me head out the sunroof just to drive it, bit of torque steer when you boot it, but tidy little car for a lady, go for it.  :y

I like the tigra. still look quite modern even now. A Puma probably drives better but if its a bargain id go for it.

Other half was torn between having either a Puma or a Tigra back in '98 so I got her one of each to try over a weekend (my job back then meant I could get my hands on all sorts of motors for 'fleet evaluation'  ;)) and the Ford drove lovely, crisper turn-in and less understeer, and was better screwed together.  That's a bit unfair on the Tigra though as it was actually quite nice in its own way, just felt less eager, which is hardly a heinous sin.

The ones I have seen round here tend to have rotten back arches, flat paint and scabby alloys but that's just me only remembering seeing abused ones (you should see the S-Class Merc near my place, 4 years old and thoroughly buggered  :o ).  If it's a decent price I'd say take it, ask when the cambelt was done and as winter is on the way do a decent service and go round it thoroughly.  They don't have any huge problems (well, rust can be an issue) and simple enough to work on.

Given the choice of a Tigra for peanuts or a Puma for peanuts, I'm sure the Puma could well be considered the better buy..but, as star_whites doesn't have the luxury of choosing between them, I'm with bluey, Dan_282, Marks DTM...I'd say yeah, why not?

Spares are available all over the place, as it's based on the Corsa. It's basically a Corsa GSi in a dress (not exactly a bad thing, surely?) with slightly less weight over the front axle, as I recall, thus improving handling a tadge. It's a bit of fun, with a VERY common engine(Vauxhall must have made more 1.6 ECOtecs than any other 90s engine) so servicing should be a doddle. Back arches get grotty (name a Vauxhall that doesn't) a lot have been thrashed/poorly maintained. 1.6s got ABS/discs all-round, which was still a nice novelty mid-90s. Have fun, I say!  8-)
