every time I start the car on snow or ice! (or mud in a mates field)

starts its off in 3rd for nice gentle traction, worked a charm

It makes the gearbox lock in 3rd gear, so better traction on slippery surfaces.

It will disengage at 45mph.

Whoever said it shouldnt be touched is- at best wrong, at worst a twerp! Someone designed the gearbox winter mode, and put an on/off button on it. Chances are it's meant to be used!

Snow mode very useful, practically a lifesaver!

Used mine frequently in the recent snow, find it very useful. It wont guarantee getting you to the top of a hill, if you havent approached the bottom of the hill with enough momentum. ;)
We had this discussion recently, but personally I prefer to have the TC switched off when going uphill in the snow.

What did you think might happen if you pressed it?  ;) As said it just sets the car off in 3rd, as it will in any other Vx auto.
re not getting up an icy hill. It only controls the gearbox, it can't give any more grip between tyre & road.  :-? :-? :-? I never attempt to drive up the hill I live at the top of in my Omega when it's icy. That's what the Astra is for.  :y :y
