A mate of mine who sold them a BMW 3-series that had a knackered steptronic gearbox. Car was worth £1500 if all was well, but about £400 as it was. Recon steptronic gearbox fitted, was gonna cost him about a £grand.
We buy any car offered him £700.
You do the sums.........

Not all of their buyers are "mechanics".
The guy that looked at his and took it for a (very short) test drive, told him he was an ex-car salesman!
He was that busy that day, the test drive was basically " around the block".
SO, MORAL OF THE STORY IS....
if you have a problem that only shows up once car is fully "warmed up", you can maybe do them for a decent price, as there is no comeback from them once the deal is done.

That may be, but....you don't get the money paid into your bank account for three days.........

True, but for an £25 fee, you can have the cash in your bank account the next day. 8-)
As said, it is correct to say they pay well under the going rate, BUT, if you have a lemon you would not want to sell private, then selling to these chancers is no bad thing. The people who buy the cars later on at auction are not really expecting a car with no problems.
Its one over the big boys, I say.

 Whilst what you are saying is true, the set of circumstances necessary to enable you to get one over on them would have to be just so. It would have to be a busy time and the car would have to appear sound on the test drive. You'd have to chance your luck.

But, I dare say, the odd 'lemon' would not eat into their profits too much.

Same as above really,
Asked how much for my low mileage diesel minter rover and they offered me £120....Sold it for £650 private sale the next week.
Also, was worth £160 as scrap weigh in lol,
so yeah, major con on some cars.

Interesting that they don't pay for 3 days unless you pay a fee....  Nobody in their right mind would release a car on a private sale until you've got the cash....

friend of mine rang them last week.

offered her 1600 quid for a cleo on a 53 plate with 43,000 miles on the clock.

she sold it for 2250 quid private yesterday and the new buyer ripped her hand off at that price 

imho, they know most people who ring then are desperate and will have your pants down

Let's just say, for the sake of arguement, that they turn it round after two days. Customer drives it off the forecourt straight into a bus. Car wrecked and you haven't even been paid for it.

We ALL agree that they will give you a crap price, but the point is once you have signed the paperwork the money is guaranteed from that point on.
IF THE ENGINE BLOW UP AS ITS DRIVEN ON THE TRAILER THERE IS NO COMEBACK ON YOU...

they offer a service for people who are desperate for money,they offered me £1000 less for what i sold my merc for on top of that they wanted a £49.99 admin fee...does anyone know what happends to the cars they buy...they have an office next to where i work...they have a transporter leavin daily full of cars,a sad sign of the times ? :-/
