are we talking similar size car, estate maybe?

Either way, diesel large saloon or estate for 7-8k.....i'd say prestige brands, a couple of years old with a good history.

Front or rear wheel drive a preference?

Most cars nowadays seem to be front wheel drive, even volvo switched in the 90's.

So BMW is one of the only decent reliable RWD manufacturer consistently using that chassis style.
Get a nice 525d, or 530d, or if you can find one a 535d, for 8k. Will have all the toys, good looks, great engines. Even the twin turbo 535 will all that power can still do 40+mpg with ease.

and the newer 520/25/30d engines can do up to 60mpg on a run.

or how about this....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-A8-S8-V8-LPG-Better-than-Final-Edition-Spec_W0QQitemZ190520397176QQcategoryZ9835QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8321523546324992709#ht_2190wt_1139

I've read up on it thoroughly and it seems to be a one of kind which was way ahead of itself.....

A true special car created by someone who knew what they wanted.

As you don't want a Beemer, 7 series would be ideal, but, I'd say E-Class Merc e320/e270 CDi, Audi A6? Loads of good choices out there.
