Had A Big Shouting Match With VX LOL
« on: 12 July 2007, 13:12:21 »

Phone up Harrow VX again and told them that the 4pot Steering Boxes do not have VARIABLE EFFORT with the Info The Boy gave me
and the guy said that information is wrong the part you need is 24460153 so i am well that strange since on my Steering Box its Part Number 9227772 NON VARIABLE EFFORT And He says loudly I AM THE EXPERT and the Computer says your Chassis Number needs a 9 gear Variable Effort.
they are all the same through the range we have omega limos 4 pot and v6 and they all have the same Box( Strange would not have thought you would get a 4pot limo the engine is to small to pull that about)

So I go through the list that The Boy gave me again

1  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, LHD (IDENT MT, SG) (PLEASE REFER TO TECHNICAL BULLETIN TI-C-75 M18 DATED 9/96) (NLS.- USE 90538679 )  R1000001- T1105841 (90447770) (9 00 292) 1

  2  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, LHD (EXCEPT VARIABLE EFFORT POWER STEERING)  Y1000001-  9227769 9 00 396 1
  3  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (IDENT MU, SH) (PLEASE REFER TO TECHNICAL BULLETIN TI-C-75 M18 DATED 9/96) (NLS.- USE 90538680 AND SUPPLY 90538448 )  R1000001- T1105841 (90447771) (9 00 293) 1
  4  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (IDENT Y9) (NLS.- USE 90576805 )  T1105842- V1999999 (90538680) (9 00 329) 1
  5  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (IDENT N9) (NLS.- USE 9227772 )  W1000001- X1999999 (90576805) (9 00 362) 1
THIS IS THE ONE IT SHOULD BE
5  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD  Y1000001-  9227772 9 00 399 1
  6  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, LHD (IDENT SS, SQ) (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (NLS.- USE 90538728 , 90538447 , 11094532 ) (PLEASE REFER TO TECHNICAL BULLETIN TI-C-75 M18 DATED 9/96)  R1000001- T1105841 (90496588) (9 00 298) 1
  7  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, LHD (IDENT Y1, Y3) (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (NLS.- USE 9227771 )  T1105842- X1999999 (90538728) (9 00 330) 1
  7  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, LHD (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE)  Y1000001-  9227771 9 00 398 1
  8  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (IDENT SR, ST) (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (NLS.- USE 90538729 , 90538448 ) (PLEASE REFER TO TECHNICAL BULLETIN TI-C-75 M18 DATED 9/96)  R1000001- T1105841 (90496589) (9 00 299) 1
  9  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (IDENT Y4, Y6) (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (NLS.- USE 9227770 )  T1105842- X1999999 (90538729) (9 00 331) 1
THIS IS THE ONE HE KEEPS TELLING ME IT IS
9  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (NLS.- USE 24460153 )  Y1000001- 11999999 (9227770) (9 00 397) 1
  9  GEAR, ASSY., STEERING, RHD (VARIABLE EFFORT TYPE) (ZF)  21000001-  24460153 59 00 215 1

So I argue for awhile saying no its not and he is like yes it is. And I tell Him its engine specific Which again he says its not
Had enough by now So I ask for someone higher up and he says he is the top man in his Shop so I ask for someone higher from another Garage and a get a number of another Guy phone him and he is Yep Yours is a Non Variable Type without looking on a computer at last someone who knows something have a chat with him about my problems with knocking and he says the Steering Boxes never go wrong and asks me to check the Steering Column which I do but still cant find anything phone the Nice Guy back and ask if i can pop over for him to have a quick feel of the steering to see what he thinks and he is Yeah no problem.

Classic.  ;D

Typical of a little squirt with a little empire and everything he says goes!  >:(

Sounds like you found a nice, helpful bloke in the end, though.

I should hope steering boxes never go wrong at that price  :o

You're not that far from Mark in Nottingham. If anyone can sort it, he can. Then it would be a great feeling to tell these w@nkers exactly what the problem was and suggest, respectfully, that they go and get some proper training for they job they are supposed to do

Yep Just Recheck the Wishbones mark all of the bolts and nuts each side and they are tight

The reason i dont think its the wishbones or trackrods one they are all new and the knock only happens at certain degrees of the steering wheel at some degrees of the steering wheel there is no knock when you move the steering wheel left and right but at other Degrees there is a knock that can be felt throught the steering wheel and on the trackrods when under the car.

Just as amatter of interest Craig, is it a slight knock or a heavy one? I have a very slight knock sometimes but I am convinced it is a bush at the TOP of the steering column.

A knock Like your Track rod end is knacked

I am going to replace my other Top Mounts have been replaced last weekend so it cant be that I hope I replaced them right

Anyone with a haynes Manual could scan the section for replacing top mounts/removing front shocks would be nice to see if i have done it right.

I mean it was not hard to do.

Jackup Car Wheel Off
Brake Calipers removed and tied off so there is no weight on the brake pipe
Droplink Removed
2 bolts removed that hold shock and adjust camber Top Bolt Removed
Shock Out, Spring compressors on, Mount Bolt Removed Mount Off and Replaced, Mount Bolt tightened
And the The Reverse to put back together

Any wheel wobble?  Any lateral movement in the wheels 3-9 o'clock?

Mine has got an untracable knock... not too bad, not really worried...  Had a decent ex VX mechanic who now works for the people I work for, check it out on my MOT...  Normal for the Omega, especially with 110 k ....

Don't be too critical if handling is OK

this will sound like a really silly Q but....

What are the inner edges of your tyres like?

When mine have worn the car vibrates and has a knocking noise, replace the tyres and it all goes away
