think i finaly tracked down a new 2 brrl rochester! from the states, its set up from the factory, and works out not much more then the rebuild of the old one. much happier with that idea for now.
some 4 brrl holleys will be a swap for the future.

some kinda good news! looks like the knocking we thought was commin from inside the outdrives really is a intermitant missfire, thats with the good carb on it aswell, so waiting for compression test, but im guessing its a sticky valve, not sure a comp test would pick that up as its not all the time. or how you would work out which is sticky?
its a basic engine tho, and being engine not drive i dont have to have it lifted out the water, or the engines removed.

Another vote for a rebuild kit for the carb. It's only a block of metal with some jets screwed into it so chances are it will be a blocked jet, broken diaphragm or a leaking seal and a rebuild will sort it.

bear in mind that a new carb will need to be jetted for the engine spec. and possibly need some tuning work before it's running properly.

I'd be happy to cast an eye over it if I weren't in Cornwall.

LOL compression test was perfect, turns out the problem which made me pmsl was 2 leads were on the wrong cylinders!
he said its ran for an hour perfect with no missfire or banging.....
well that saves me a fair whack lol need to replace the exhaust risers on that engine as well tho.
now, thing is, ive never taken the leads off, they havnt, so it would go back to a mechanic servicing it 3 years ago!
surely i would of noticed?
will soon see, should be all done ready for weekend, or monday, so i can give it a long hot run that it really needs.
well, thats if the carb is ready in time, i may pop it on the other engine and see what happens, but there was a definite improvement when i swapped them over.

so, im a happy pirate so far! will never leave it out the water for that length of time again, you cant run the engines.
