Anyone know if these are any good,as i am now car shopping for something to replace the thirsty mig. :-/

Astra is your average FWD hatch, 1.8 should be fairly nippy.

But on the note of fuel and 'thirsty' Omega, there are a lot of people saying they are going to get rid for something better on fuel due to costs, but i don't get why people chop them in.  :-/

Looking at auto trader:

£6k gets you a basic spec Astra.

The most expensive 3.2 Elite Omegas around cost £3-4k - Lets say its worst case of £4k, that is still £2k cheaper than an 'Economical' FWD hatch.

When running the numbers for my LPG conversion, a £700 conversion cost, which saw a 30-40% saving in fuel cost, would still take approx 7,000 miles to re-cover my costs, assuming I saved 10p a mile, worst case it would take me 10,000 miles to recover.

So anyone spending just £2k more on a more economical car, is going to have to do roughly 20,000 miles before you break even, and thats best case!

V6 Omega does drink fair bit of fuel, but its cheap to buy, cheap to maintain. That counts for a lot, so don't get too hung up on mpg  :y

AVoid the 1.8, the 1.6 is a bit less power but much better economy.

The 1.7 and 1.9 cdti's are ok

As Mark said, the 1.7 & 1.9 CDTi's are OK. My son had a 1.7 CDTi SRi and it was a good motor. It was only 100 bhp but went well and was economical. With 18" wheels it looked the part as well.

when i broke my arm i had a 1.8 elite auto...one of the best cars i have ever driven...bit small though coming form a mig  :y

The 1.6 & the 1.8 are very thirsty little engines, mainly due to the fact they haven't got a 6th gear. Defiantly get a diesel, my mate has an 08 plate 1.6 VVT and he struggles to get 33 MPG on the motorway and he drives Miss Daisy. I got more from a 2.8 Turbo SAAB. Get a 1.9 CDTi :y

Nah, nothing wrong with the 1.6's but yes, the 1.8's are a bit of an issue.

i think mine has the same engine as the astra and yes the 1.8`s are thirsty little buggers and i somtimes wish i ahd waited and bought that 3.2 elite estate that josh had last year...but i fell for the veccy c as i had owned a veccy b espec with the deal i got on her as mrs bertie keeps saying some people bring sticks of rock and postcards back off holiday... he bloody brings a car!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

All the Vx power plants convert to LPG ok....et the end of the day, vx were one of the few manufacturers who sold cars new with an LPG kit fitted (although not factory fit)

Could you elaborate on what the issue is.

I now have two 1.8s in the household, one 2004 Astra H Design auto and one 2009 Life auto.
I understand the engines are slightly dfferent but have had no issues whatso ever with the 2004 and we have owned it fo 3.5 years. 2009 only just arrived but it seems very good.

Any advice gratefully received.

Oh yes I know the 1.4 is woefully under powered.

The major issue is the poor fuel consumption for little gain in power over the 1.6.

Other than that no major problwms tbh.

The 1.6 I honestly think is terrible on fuel, and it's quite underpowered too.

Both our 1.8s do mainly town driving, tops about 40mph we are lucky to see 28/29mpg. Omega on same roads/journeys 18/19mpg so is better than it was for us.

My 2009 is quoted as a "140" and the 2004 as "120". I am assuming BHP so power to weight probably as good as an Omega. Downsides are obvious though. The 2004 Design model has almost as many toys as the Omega. 2009 Life model has nothing at all except electric front windows and central locking.
