Car Tyre 12V Tyre Inflator - any reccomendations?
« on: 25 July 2011, 17:48:23 »

My little 12v Tyre Inflator from Halfords has just packed up, it must be 14 years old so it has done well and looking at the Halfords website it looks like things have moved on since I last bought one - so I summised that nearly everyone has one of these in the boot/shed/garage so thought I would see if anyone has a briliant one or knows of any to avoid.  Main requirements are that it has to have a long flex so I can get around the car (minimum3 metres) and it needs to be under £30.

I tend to use a rather great air compressor, and up to 15m of hose to pump mine up ;D

But we have a 12v one for those emergencies. Michelin I think, works better than their crappy tyres :P

I have one of these:
Halfrauds rapid digital tyre inflator

I told the Halfords yoof that my tyres weren't rapid or digital and he said in that case he wan't sure it it would still work.  It does work after a fashion.

It isn't very rapid - a minute or two for a routine top-up.  It makes quite a racket and the pre-set pressure reads a couple of PSI higher than it should.

On the plus side, it does indeed have a digital display and it fits inside the hollow of the spare wheel.  It even has some totally pointless white LEDs.

The lead is long enough to reach all four wheels on the Omega but I needed an extension to reach the rears on the Transit.  To its credit, it did reach the 60psi required for them.  It draws just enough to blow the 10A fuse found in many extension leads, which puts it right on the limit for an Omega fag lighter.

Mine has so far lasted for about two years of occasional use.

Overall, it is just about OK.  Helfrauds claim to have a 30% off promotion on tyre inflators just now.

Nope. Because if your anything like me it won't be needed for years, then when the emergency arises the poxy thing will seize, break, snap off or fall apart in in your hands. It will also need all four doors open to reach each tyre as the flex is never long enough...

...ime.

However I have a small compressor in the garage and hate camping, so your probably not like me.  :-/

I've offered him a tent he can stand up in. It'd be rude if he didn't. ;)

I think it was 2woody who had the nicest tyre compressor I've seen - Porsche, IIRC. It actually had a motor that looked generously rated enough to survive running for more than a minute or two at a time, which is more than can be said for anything else I've come across.

It was nice and quiet, too. Handy in the circumstances, because I think we were inflating trailer tyres at about 7:30 in the morning. ::)
