Had a few as hire cars on holiday. Quite unrefined engines, esp the 2.8 diesel which lacks power and is quite noisey, but seem OK for the sort of offroad you implied.

you'll struggle to get a Japanese 4x4 diesel for less than £2000, especially one that hasn't been to the moon and back full of sheep.

Disco or Range Rover (1st generation) is your answer, as long as it's a petrol one. There really aren't words to describe just how gutless a 4-cylinder diesel disco is.
