These systems will overide themselves based on a number of conditions such as:

1) Battery voltage low
2) Engine not at opertating temp
3) Outside air temp below a certain limit
4) Aircon on

Also, if the system has been cycled a number of times within a certain period, eg 10 times in 3 minutes - then it will also overide itself to avoid a flat battery.

The only reason these systems have caught on is that the official MPG tests have an idling period, if you can use zero fuel during that time then you will improve the test result.

Also, in some countries (Germany I think), it is mandatory to switch your engine off whilst stationary at a level crossing - hence these systems being introduced by the Germans initially as a selling point. I think that BMW were the first in 2007 with the 1 and 3 series.

I wonder how long a car spends idling during it's life? I guess the boffins will have an average figure....

...or is this one of those stupid arithmetic exercises that never works out. Ex amount sat at the lights, ex amount warming up on the drive in winter while the owner has breakfast, ex amount sat at round abouts, ex amount sat waiting in traffic jams, ex amount sat waiting at level crossings, ex amount at pelicans crossings...

....ad it all up and and you get go drive the car for 10 mins then the car dies.  :D

Btw, do all new diesels have this particulate filter in the exhaust now? Dpf is it?

Pootle around town and the owner thinks the exhaust is going to catch fire... Or something?  :-/

I'm pretty sure most do now, I know my Beemer has one, not that you really notice, other than when it's doing a DPF regen in which it'll produce a hell of a lot of heat, and smells like burning caramel. My van though for example doesn't have one.

the new Colt i had in Portugal had it too, very disconcerting, sitting at a busy road trying to launch into 60mph flow, with the engine off  ::)

I found the off button to stop it  :)

but I think things are changing too much just for emissions anyone else agree on that  :-?

the path forward for emissions is decided for us by a committee of the EU. (Cars 21 from memory). They dictate and we must follow - we don't have the legal right to disagree.

Cars 21 is currently studying an outright ban on the internal combustion engine

I remember seeing the hamster moaning about stop/start on top gear a while back. He was driving a new Panamera Turbo!!

Can't really see the point of trying to reduce emmisions on a car like that!  :-/ ::)

That's OK. Once they've banned vacuum cleaners we'll have plenty of spare motors kicking around for our electric cars. ::)

Sounds rather stupid.

Which external combustion system do we use?

Old cars will be worth a fortune then

Electric motors are too heavy and need too many batteries, 4 tons is too heavy for a decent motor

This got me looking - and fell across 0-60 times of trains.

19 seconds 0-60
Electric loco 0-100 in under 1/2 minute, 18 seconds 0-60

Right bunch of nutters

All were just locos

Stop/start technology is a complete waste of time! I had a Beemer courtesy car a while ago with stop/start - hated it and had to switch it off. Surely the factories that will need to turn out more batteries and starter motors will chuck out far more emmissions than what is saved by the engine going off for a few seconds. :-?
