Changed brake shoes and cable on the Toyota (Brothers Car) and i must say that even though i was doing this on the deck and its a '92 plate that has never been looked after all the parts came apart without a problem, even the heat shield bolts.

Put new brake shoes on passenger side, all done in record time. Feeling quite chuffed, on final bits noticed weaping brake fluid from brake pipe that leads to the caliper  :'(

It's just after the bracket you remove to change springs, inspecting it further, flakes of metal just came away in my hand  :'(

Yup, parked up 2.2

Taking the 3.2  :y

Would show a picture, but its been ages since this PC had a dropbox sync  ::)

So looking on the bay, think I need this (any other suggestions? Eurocarparts don't list the pipe, only hose):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-OPEL-OMEGA-SALOON-REAR-BRAKE-PIPE-/380126118056?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item58814840a8

To go from the rear calliper to the mounting bracket, on the suspension arm.

Reading past threads, mixture of suggestions from pushing brake pedal fully down, to sealing brake fluid tank with cling film?

Now it looks like simple nut each end? Is it just that easy? Brake depressed, slacken off both nuts and just remove and replace pipe? Caliper can stay put, or easier to whip it off?

Also blast of plusgas or not? Its weaping quite badly, so thinking plusgas is a no as it will mix with the fluid?

Glad I spotted this today rather than approaching a round-about!  :o

Leave the caliper where it is. Changing the brake fluid once fixed would be a sensible precaution, especially if not done in the last two years :y

Be prudent to check the whole system for any sign of similar issues on the rest of the brake plumbing :-\

That is the pipe you need, worth asking Vauxhall before committing though, as a new one might be reasonable :y

Cheers, had fresh fluid less than 6 months ago. About a month ago I went around all pipes and put some grease on them, just done drivers side rear shoes, cable again is greased but fair bit of corrosion there.

Thinking maybe replace both at same time  :-\

Guessing not a TC item, but will enquire with Vx  :y

Wouldn't press brake pedal - you'll just squirt fluid out as you undo pipe unions

Yup :y don't need to do anything until you've fixed the leak...

Clingfilm under the cap might help slow the leak, but it won't stop any moisture from entering the fluid, as the system is already open...

Clingfilm under the cap is a Haynes recommendation to minimise fluid loss while you have an open end. It probably doesn't do any harm. If you don't do it a lot of brake fluid will piss out over the ground, you, your tools and the neighbours cat (possibly).

Motorbike brake systems are sealed, car systems have a breather in the cap which means they aren't totally sealed against moisture.

Stupid question, sorry. Cling film on, then cap screwed on? Or just cling film wrapped on?  :-\

cling film then cap.

the point is to stop the breather allowing the pressure to equalise on top, thus helping slow the leak .
