New D2S HID Bulbs!
« on: 18 August 2008, 15:52:57 »

I decided after reading on some HID kit stuff that since HID bulbs loose output over time and since my bulbs are around 7years old, I figured it wouldnt hurt to get new ones.

I decided to try the 85122+ and a set of unknown brand 5000k,
The 5000k I think was the wrong bulbs because rather then looking blue they look more yellowish white, which makes me think that they are closer to 4300k.
I am trying to sort the things out but here are some pictures as of the moment...

THE US projectors are crap so dont mind the pictures too much...

New Bulb on the left...

OEM Bulbs
New Bulbs.

Here it is from lets say 20m away..

Output on the road..

Here is a 6000k Bulbs in the headlights, and I think 5000k in the fogs but I may be wrong they look way too blue so they may be some sort of higher K value... they were some unknown brand so its porbably +/- 2000k...

Here are the new pics...

These are the new 5000k bulbs but they were more white/yellow then the OEM D2S...

yeah the projectors actually kind of suck but... its not bad, I still think that there was more light with the 4300k but no color now its more then enough purple blue colors with plenty of white light so it seems just as bright if not more but I think there are less lumens on the road...

I will try to take some more pictures but next up will be a new projector retrofit...

THis last attempt was with new OEM bulbs and also a New 6000k Bulb installed in one of the headlights...

Light Bulbs LIFE
100% at 0 hours  = 3200 lm
90% ar 200 hours  = 2880 lm
80% at 1000 hours  = 2560 lm
75% at 1500 hours  = 2400 lm
70% at 2000 hours  = 2240 lm

OEM ~4,300K 3,200 lm
5,000 K 3100 lm
6,000 K 2700 lm > 2560lm 1000hr OEM bulbs
8,000 K 2400 lm

I am quite happy with the output and I think it looks great, night driving seems no different in fact with the 5000k fogs and 6000k bulbs its quite white up ahead, and when I pass cars with OEM HIDs and compare the colors theirs almost look dim but they have more lumens...

I figured I have around 2x2700lm LOW Beam  + 2x3100lm FOG = 11600lm
OEM bulbs in low Beam and HID fog would be 2*3200 + 2*3100 = 12600lm
Stock configuration would emit 2*1500 + 2*1200 = 5400lm.
Stock configuration with HID fog would be around 9200lm

The facts are facts, the 4300 puts out the most usable light but its in such a color spectrum that it looks like you are lighting up the road with candles,
In the case of the 6000k bulbs you get so much more whiter light, not blue but white, and the headlight looks different as well but you can tell there isnt as much light to the side, and the intensity of it is not quite like that of the 4300k.

So if you like a bit more exotic color and you dont mind the slightly less light output then you will love the 6000k, the 5000k almost doesnt show color, IMO it looks better in a reflective housing, but when it comes to projectors, there is no point.
You stick with either 4300 or 6000.

Here are some pictures that I captured last night, so you tell me if you like them and lets hear some comments on them.

Very nice looking.  On seeing your pics I decided on a small change myself.  I wanted to try and match my fog lights with the main beams.

I purchased a pair of 6500K's for the fogs and tried them out today.  You can see the difference below.  I think it looks a lot better with a more uniform colour than before and the lights match better.  I have not had a chance to check the fogs in the dark yet, but I hope they are up to the job!

Here is the before shot.

Here is a comparison.

And here is the final result.

Lads, they look really smart, been meaning to do the same meself. Rich, just to clarify, you just have new bulbs fitted and Cat, you have HID fogs right??? Where do you locate the ballasts??? I presume they want to be fairly well protected from water ingress. Pics appreciated!

I got a chance to take them around on a long ride a few nights ago and let me tell you I am impressed with the result.  I realize that  there is less light on the road but that light is 5x whiter then anything out there, I even passed other cars with OEM HIDs like Bimmers and some japanese cars and even they didnt seem to have as white of a light on the road.

So I recommend it to anyone, 5000k may work just as good but the 6000k is quite white and it matches the Fogs as well..

Here are a few pics of the HID ballasts for the FOGs....

The HID ballasts are waterproof so no worries about water on them.  so far 1 year no problems on them.  not even rust....

Here are 5000k FOGS and OEM HIDs...

Now with the 6000k the fogs and the low beams are exactly the same color... bright white with just a tiny bit of blue/purple hue.

standard xenon bulbs arnt classed as for example 6500k bulbs, it would be eg 100w or 55w or whatever..
i think sometimes they put it in the add to get attention.
they are just standard h1 bulbs like the headlights
