I thought the European Working Time Directive was strictly enforced in Germany. Doesn't your 58 hour week fall well outside this?

I seem to remember hearing that German companies faced heavy fines for breaking the rules which was making them uncompetitive?

I wish that was true they have more Directives in Germany than hot dinners, but as long as the Unions
draw an Employer/Works council Agreement with the Employers, that causes a so called derogation
then the initial Directives are nothing but Guidlines

True but only on the so called shop floor for "Normal Workers" as i am so called Part time Management
this does not apply.

So, they also bend the rules to suit themselves. Good on em! I wish they would work that over here. :(

I agree with you, free time is immensely valuable and real luxury when it is denied to you. What I object to is being told that I am not allowed to work as long as I like. I know that's not quite how it works but that was the spirit of the directive in my opinion.

:-/I think it's 48hrs but it's another pointless euro legislation that your company can opt out of so why bother? I could be a euro MP 'cos my heads full of B/S & i could earn twice the money!!!! 8-)

The joys of being a Truck Driver...Why do we do it.. :-/
I started on vans in my late teens, then 7.5 tonners, did a bit of cabbing, was even a milkman for a while but i need to be out & about, ca'nt sit in the same place day, week month year, ever.
Tried forklifting but watched the trucks leave & have to admit i missed being "down the road"
I'm 44 now so that's it till i retire. Some of us have to be HGV positive!!! 8-)

Isn't interesting that you think that sitting in your cab all day is different to me sitting in my office? Just goes to show what's one man's meat is another man's poison.  ;D ;D ;D

Several years ago there was a big push in Europe about the reduction in hours in the working week, is it just me or does everybody seem to be putting in more hours than ever, my free time seems to evaporated and I feel that time away from work is less than ever :-/
