Monitor.
« on: 30 July 2007, 20:36:55 »

As many of you will know i've only recently started out on this tinter thing but for awhile now the monitor's been flickering from normal to blue then settling in to normal. However it's all "bluey blue" most of the time now.
It all came as a bundle box from T***o as p* w***d told me i needed to buy this, that and the whole store really. Anyway i've got 2 yrs warranty, 1st (still in date) with T***o & 2nd with Ph****ps.
Been told by mates that they'll replace it as cheaper than repair so i do'nt have to be offline.
I've got purchase reciept & paid by switch so what should i do next?
It all still works fine & the monitor's got "iQon" logo. :-/

As TB says, worth giving the cable a wiggle and make sure it's properly plugged in both ends.

Otherwise, take it back under warranty. Or use it as an excuse for a flat screen purchase!

got to be honest, although i got my city & guilds in tv repair, I just rang up Dell today as my tv has an annoying intermittent fault.  I just couldn't be bothered to investigate. New one arrives tomorrow.

We live in a throw away society.  Even though it's new they'll probably give you a new one.  I'd check the wiring then give it a thump - tried and tested method of TV repair where I come from :y

That's a point.

Does the logo / on-screen setup display of the monitor come up normally or are all the colours FUBAR on that too?

If the OSD has dodgy colours it's definately something internal like tube connections as TB said. If not, could be cable / connectors or outside chance it's the graphics card (unlikely).

Do you know someone with a spare they could lend you a) to verify it's the monitor and b) to cover you for any down time?

Even in the days when things were built properly TVs were a PITA to service IMHO. Either everything working or smoke escaping ::). They're too big to work on these days too. I know a guy who runs a small TV repair shop and if you call in within 2 weeks of a thunderstorm you have to hunt for him behind the piles of 36" TVs. He's a big chap too, so not normally easy to hide ;D

Nah, I learned on KT3 and even G11 type chassis, easy to fault find and service... ...unlike her telly in kitchen that packed up a couple of weeks ago, though fortunately that was just a fuse...

I had this problem ages ago with a dell 17" crt, I just kept giving it a whack and it would work ok for a few days, then whacking didnt work, so I removed the back cover and wiggled the silver box thing on the back of the tube and found it was coming off, one shove back in place and all was well untill the mrs spilled coffee down it  ;D Im on 20" LCD now, no looking back  :y

I guess I need more practice ;)

I have a "problem" (SWMBO's words) with Tektronix 'scopes at the moment. Can't pass one at a junk sale without "saving" it. 5 project 'scopes on the go now, I think.  ;D

Keeps me out of mischief, as I keep saying  ::).

My first Tek scope was a 546. Still got it. It got donated to my school by Marconi and the head of science couldn't work it so I talked him into selling it to me, nicked my mum's wheelbarrow to bring it home and promptly got a bo77ocking for bringing "more junk" into the house.

Junk it wasn't, however. It's still absolutely flat to 50MHz+, triggers up to 150MHz no problem and, at 500 watts power consumption, it keeps my attic room warm in winter! It's a hybrid of valves (dozens of them) in the timebase and power supply and transistors in the vertical amps.

Re the monitor, if the colour changes when you (Gently!) thump it then its prob a bad solder joint. This happens a lot in TV's because of the heat making everything expand/contract esp the soldered joints. Now they have stopped putting lead in solder, things are going to get worse. TEK scopes are great, I had a 465 for many years, and recently replaced it with a 2465, which I bought from the US. Its quite cheap over there now thanks to the exchange rate. I also have a 2465B that I am trying to repair, but getting spares is a pain. I mangaged to get a 7000 series mainframe along with some plugins and a 7L18 spec analyser. Thats really great for being flexible, trouble is its very heavy and needs a substantial table to suport it!. Maybe its being used to them, but I prefer analogue scopes to digital ones, what you see is what's actually there at the probe, not what some computer thinks it has got along with anti alias filters etc.
