EML been on now for longer than I would like.  Code read 2m ago indicated Lambda sensor, mechanic suspected air leak but as running smooth now said to leave it cos it was unlikely the sensor was faulty and could be throwing away good money after bad.  Did change temperature sender though £30 cos main problem was rough running when cold.

Anyway long story short I've just had it re-read by Vauxhall as PO100 - Mass Air Mass Meter.  Should I change this with genuine GM parts or new unit on Ebay no 200039286270 suitable for my 2003 2.2CD Z22XE engine for £45?

Having read the problems of Taxi Driver I'm concerened this won't fix the fault.  Lambda sensor code no longer showing & no other codes recorded. Help!

MAF is reliable if not poked about internally.  I'd still be inclined to look for air leaks.  Or if someone is local with same engine, do a temp swap over of MAF

To quote Mark....

Don't just accept the code as the fault, use it as an indication of where to look.

Air mass meter, lambda sensor and running rough when cold says to me you have an air leak.

They can be tricky to find so I would take apart earch section of the air intake, clean it (be careful with the air mass meter!), examine it thoroughly and then reconnect making sure it has a good seal.

Now check around the maifold for a leak (this is very possible).

I would not change the meter until I had eliminated everything else first.

OK, so ecu isn't complaining then. Is car running OK now?

Presumably its going to be P0100 again (I know you can't confirm without code reader). I will look up on TIS later (Not at my own PC at moment)

Thanks.  Looks like my helpful independant back street mechanic may be on the money with the air leak.  He thinks its probably the inlet maninfold but obviously not sure.

Car runs sweet with EML - rev's don't seem restricted and fuel economy down maybe 2/3 mpg on run.  Am I damaging the cat or anything else by not fixing the air leak asap?

All this happened within weeks of major service & belt/rollers changed.

You won't kill anything in the short tern, but wrong air fuel mixture is both bad for the wallet, and in the longer term, the cat.

It will run well enough when warm, as I suspect the leak seals itself.

ECU detects X83-43 volatge is temporarily low, code stored immediately.

Few tests to do, but doubtful they are worthwhile.  May be worth cleaning contacts on MAF plug, and ensure its properly latched into place.  Then check all hoses are properly clamped...

I've checked & cleaned the MAF contacts & tightened all jubilee clips as suggested.  All joints are clean as a whistle except the connection at the end of the hose which has some, but not much oil around the base.

I bought a cheapo Tech2 from Ebay with virtual com port & usb connector, but it won't work so I can spend the cash on garage bills.

Q. Will this code reset if air leak sealed or will it need cancelling by real Tech2?

Just a quick question.....you definatley have the EML on (spanner symbol thro the car) and not the engine symbol (emissions) can be a bit confusing.....

Fom what you have described.....it could be air leak....as others suggested......but when did you last change the air filter???

If theres no sign of an air leak.....rough running when cold.....maybe starved of air....ie mixture is richer when cold plus air mass sensor fault being flagged......from what i can remember.....the ecu calculates how much air should be going into the engine then checks the air mass sensor.....if its way out the ecu flags an air mass sensor fault.

So from how i see it......either an air leak and ecu will flag an air mass sensor fault or too little air and it will do the same.

Thanks Taxi Driver - I am the spanner driving the car, cos the dash light illiminated orange is the 'Control Indicator for exhaust' according to the manual.
