I've got a squeek comming from the front of my engine. At idle (500 rpm) it is about twice  a second.  If i remove the auxillary drive belt to eliminate any of the bits driven by that, will i need to electrically disconnect the alternater as well?  I know you should never turn an alternator with no connection to the battery etc, but will it hurt the other way round? I don't think so but does anybody know?

You'll be fine (it will be just the same as a stalled engine, or just turning the ignition on).

The alternator will be perfectly happy but dont run the engine for too long, you wont have any water circulating.

Does the noise change when you turn A/C on or off? The A/C clutch can make odd noises if there is play in the pulley bearing.

Running with my A/C permanantly in eco mode as no gas in the system (I assume as it doesn't get cold) so compressor clutch not engaged.

You can slip the belt off in a few seconds, just get a decent sized 14mm or 15mm spanner on the tensioner. Turn the spanner to release the tension and slip the belt off.

Just be careful putting the belt back on - there's some good springs in the tensioner.

Could it be the actual belt? Squeaking twice per second is a bit low for a pulley, they are going around at about 8 times per second, depending on their size. I'm wondering if a bit of the belt is worn and it makes a pulley squeak when it gets to it. My air con compressor clutch squeaked after not being used for a couple of years but that was constant and was just rust build up.

Give the belt a quick squirt of wd40, if its the belt you will get instant silence, wont last long though :(

Yeah, tried that with the WD40 - difficult to spray onto the belt though and didn't really change ananything.  Stripped the belt off yesterday and it is kernacker'd so that is probably it then.

Hello Capt.

Did you ever fix this.... this problem sound just like my Engine Chiring Noises I get at Idle.... kinda goes about about 1000RPM.

WD40 made no difference to me either.

No not yet - it's a bit intermittant, but as said earlier, the aux drivebelt is tired.
