Water in footwell
« on: 07 December 2006, 19:23:49 »

I'm after some opinions. I'm thinking of buying an Elite, it has a known intermittent coolant leak, and the owner has discovered some water in the passenger foot well.

What's the likely cause? Heater Matrix? If so, has anyone ever done one, and what are they like?

Any other causes of water in footwell, eg scuttle drain from memory? Cheers...

I'd go with scuttle drain and a HBV problem.

I understand the logic of scuttle drain, but a HBV wouldn't cause a leak into the car, no?

No but might explain intermittant coolant loss.  Two seperate issues.

If its a knackered heater matrix, its a big job - a lot has to be stripped out to get to it...

Like The Barge Captain says, it could be two seperate faults,

The leaking HBV can be a tricky one to catch, as in my experience it can only leak when the system is cold and then again the other way around, only when hot, when pressurised..

As for the scuttle drain. Try pooring water into the area were the pollen filter is located, once you have removed the grill.  But not on the filter, Making sure that you miss it and direct it away past the filter into the gap toward the front of the car well away from it. If it fills up, then that is a seperate issue. Your drain is blocked.

Then look again at the HBV

Other members correct me if I have discibed this badly please.
