Happens with remote only? Common problem, esp worse in bad weather.  The lock gets a bit tired. Clean up mech and linkages, and clean microswitches....

Yep - the mechanism in the door seizes up.

It's door card off. Clean up with WD40, then lots of grease.

It'll be perfect after that.

Coincidentally, i have just noticed this problem with my own drivers door. It feels as if the handle is 'missing' the linkage, but I'm hoping a good clean etc will solve the problem.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass, mine is having this problem in 2 ways now. First, when unlocking with the remote sometimes the driver's lock doesn't come up far enough to unlock, so the key has to be used. Second, the handle itself is slack which used to require a hard pull to open it, but it's now got to the point where it doesn't open at all! Not much fun having to climb in the back and open it from the inside :-X

Just to let you know job done and works a treat now. Thanks for your help :y

Is it possible to upgrade to later style 2 button remote on the key rather earlier style big centre button with little side button for double locking. Or are these earlier type more reliable?

What made me think is that reading handbook that came with car its a 97/98 book and mine is a 96 so some of the little bits are different, must be a post mini facelift book. any one want to swop books?

Oh and just in case no ones said it yet HAPPY NEW YEAR  ;D ;D ;D

Yes - chances are, yours is Megamos (you'd need to check), so you would need new style key and remote made by Megamos. This would need to be cut and programmed (both transponder and remote) to your car, which would require carpass.  So unless you need another key, it works out quite expensive...

Also, I reckon the older seperate ones have better range ;)

Cheers TheBoy i'll leave be then. :y

Range is quiet poor though. have to get almost right up to the car and aim remote at sensor in sunroof switch assembly. Is this normal or do you think batteries are on their way?  I take it this is aline of sight remote unlike a radio transmitter :-?

Eh? you shouldn't have IR on 1996 car, should be RF (receiver in drivers kick panel).  Have you got the IR receiver near sunroof switch then?

Er....   I just assumed it was the reciever. Its got a red ball looking unit near the sunroof switch. And if the engine is switched off after a while the ign cut out activates and i have to point remote at this ball to de-activate it :)

Right then, ignore what I said earlier...

IR type, no chance of swapping for newer style integrated key...

Also, new IR keys (should you ever need more) require a Tech I (not Tech II) to program...
