For the first few miles this morning, in the cold, the 2.0 sounded just a touch top-endy, like the hydraulic lifters were chattering. it wasn't serious, but definately there.

The oil in it is black as black, so I intend to change it tonight and fit a new filter. I then propose to do 1000 miles oil + filter changes for the next 5 thousand miles, with a good 10-40 semi synth.

I don't really like the thought of oil additives, so presumably doing this should improve the situation?

If its that black, I would change now, then in 250miles, then 500m, then do a couple at 1000m intervals before doing them every 4k....   ....then next set of oil will go very black within a few miles as there is still lots hanging around the engine...

How much do you have "in stock" ?
Probably about 4 x 5l semi, but maybe only a couple of oil filters...  ...I can also go to a dealer though.

Oil is around £8.50 per 5l (with a 4 for 3 offer)
Filters are around £1.11

All exc VAT.

A good approach there but I would use The Boy's change schedule.  I myself used this method very successfully a few year back on an engine which contained oil like treacle.  Like you, I don't like oil additives nor flushing oil.

mine was black on the first change, 50 miles later it was black again!

Cleaned the breathers, changed it again about 1k miles changed it again. BIG difference, once warm now its much better than it used to be.

Apart from the oil change procedures described i wouldnt worry TOO much about a little top end rattle when cold !

As far as i am aware, all or most of the VX 4 pots can be slightly rattley when cold, but should settle down quite quickly !

Mine is not rattly at all when started , but does have the slightest tap when pulling off first thing in the morning ! This completly dissapears within a 100 yards or so !

1. Agreed, best bet is to try cleaning the engine using TheBoy’s method.

2. If this does not help you can consider using oil with lower W rating – e.g. 5W or 0W – the lower W value means the oil is lighter when cold and will get to the tappets faster.
      
4. The use of Wynns Hydraulic Tappets additive is very controversial – Car Mechanics Magazine recommends it, and the Internet is full of stories of people who used it and found it did what is says on the box, such as this one from mbclub.co.uk:

my girlfriends vauxhall astra GTE with hydraulic tappets was really really bad - so for a laugh I bought some "Wynns Hydraulic Tappet" magic goo - chucked it in the engine and it was perfect within 5 miles - no noise at all (GTE's are renowned for noisy tappets). for a fiver its got to be worth a try. It claims to clean out the little pistons and free them up. bottle is 8" tall, honey coloured liquid, availible from most small car shops.'

But I know that many people here do not like this product, and I can't say that I have ever tried it myself, so I would only suggest trying this if all else fails and the noise is really annoying you…

Tried the Wynns stuff twice, with oil changes, but hasn't made any difference to my noise  :(
The lifters will have to be looked at  :o

Having cleaned out many a follower (they are not tappets!) now, I struggle to see how any additive can effect a fix....the oil changes should help to flush them through...

When I strip a power plant for re-build and follow my follower cleaning procedure, the oil that comes out is generaly VERY black and once the follower is empty it often feels gritty when you press it....this does seem to flush out with fresh oil though...

What seems to be the problem with flushing oil?  I have used it a couple of times and the results are fantastic.  I know there is a very small risk of damaging seals but I would think this would only happen if you left it in longer than recommened or if your seals were about to go anyway....?

Correct me if I am wrong, which giving my relative knowledge is highly likely...   ::)
