Cool running

Struggled to get over 80degrees, turned on ECO (turned off compressor), temperature got up to 90deg or so.

Where do I look then!

My guess would be a thermostat that's not closing fully. Switching the air on on will start up the auxiliary cooling fans resulting in more airflow through the radiator and a cooler engine, if the engine temperature is not being controlled properly by the thermostat.

Try starting the engine from cold and feeling the temperature of the top radiator hose, and also the engine temperature at the heater hoses (with heater on). The heater hoses should warm up gradually, and start getting warm pretty much as soon as the engine starts.

The top radiator hose shoiuld remain cool (it may warm up a little) until the engine has reached normal operating temperature and suddenly get very hot when the thermostat opens. If it warms up with the heater hoses I would suspect a dodgy thermostat.

If the air con affects the temperature gauge immediately rather than after a few minutes running it could be a bad earth to the engine block, with the extra load from the fans affecting the reading from the temperature sensor in the coolant bridge.

If you let it warm up to 90ish then take it for a blast.....if the them temp drops down to 80 or below....then as Kevin says sounds like thermostat knacked.

Tho i do like his method to mine  ;)

Sounds like stat. Reason A/C cools it down more is because when a/c on, so is one of the rad fans...

Thrashed the nuts off it air con off gets to 90 then cools down to 80 with aircon back on.

Last summer was in 90s most of the time solo or towing gas or petrol

As an aside, how often are you changing coolant, and what are you using?

Not often - not since I dumped the system last year!!

Antifreeze what ever is handy

Last was one at Tesco because the low water came on (got a slow leak with no obvious location - had it for ages now)

Definately not a bad earth - gradual change, heater heats up quickly - up to 24deg within 90 seconds (thats my change over temp), I will check top hose tomorrow but will probably get a thermostat anyway.

Where is the thermostat on the V6?

Stat is in valley, right at front.  Bit of a pig, but sweettalk JamesV6CDX who has done one recently....  ....just don't say he is too young to work on your car  :-X
