I'm probably being stupid but can someone tell me what this little button is (arrowed in the pic below - not a pic of my car btw just one on autotrader i nicked to save me taking the camera out to the car. ) it's a pic of a wee car with an arrow thing on it.

What does it do? and how do i work it?

Looks like re-circ......takes air thats in the cabin to pass thorugh the heater/aircon rather than from outside the car....useful when following smelly diesels etc....

Agree, air recirculation. When light is on, it recircs cabin air back into cabin rather than fresh air.  Keeps fumes out of car if stuck in traffic, but can cause it to mist up, and the air obviously goes stale after a while.

with air con,also gets the cabin air to temp quicker,

and gives me one thumping head ache on long trips when i forget to turn it off (stale air thing)

Mine smells of "the garden of england " (kent)..until you go beyond M25.then no amount of buttons improves the smell

Not sure if the same on pre facelights with climate, but facelifts turn off the recirc after about 20 mins  :y

I don't.  Just my tractor smells of diesel, hence smells like London....
