Anyone know a method of removing fine scratches from the windscreen?

I have been told brasso will do it  

The scratches are very fine and not in my main line of sight but when it rains the are more evident, I do not want to go to any great expense. Thoughts?

It would take one hell of a long time and elbow grease to polish out even fine scratches out of a wind screen with brasso glass is an extreamely hard substance but it could be done if you have got alot of time on your hands

In the glass trade, we use a compound called 'jeweller's rouge' to polish out fine scratches in glass. I'm not certain what compound it is but I think it's cerium oxide.

We normally use a low speed grinder with a wet polishing bonnet. This can be effective on very shallow scratches but can easily 'burn' the glass and does take a very long time. It's normally cheaper to cut another piece of glass although on thick glass, say 19mm, which has been processed and toughened, we may give it a go to try to rescue it.

I have the same problem on my windscreen but don't think I could be bothered to spend the time necessary to make any difference. Not sure about Brasso but any mild abrasive would have some effect.

As to glass being hard, a green plastic kitchen scourer will leave bad scratches in glass so be careful.

I had experience on fathers and one friends car. Both windscreens were damaged with screwdriver..

I use G3 style polish(a bit thicker one not G3 dont remember the name) with a polish machine (nearly impossible by hand)

On fathers car half a day was enough to remove..

But friends car was a new megane and we both worked totally 3 days to remove..Result very good..

If you dont want to loose time you can use 1200 grid and after machine...

Plus : also you will need to use a finer polish to make it shine again...

i`ve got the same problem with my windscreen so when i get paid this month it s time to use my fully comp insurance to get a new windscreen outa em for winter....

Thanks for the all the options, don,t have 3 days to spare   so i will just live with them until that stone fly's up from that lorry

Toothpaste also works.  Its a little more coarse than Brasso but needs a mop in a drill to get the best effect, especially if waiting for a quarry lorry to come along.....

Older models  are more easy to do but new models dont know what chemicals are inside or kind a treatement they are really tough..

ps : must add.. on the megane it was deep as 1 mm

Be careful before you have an 'accident' with your windscreen. They just never seem right once they've been replaced. It not just a case of popping a new one in these days, they are part of the structure of the car and are a specialist job. And by specialist I dont mean the spotty youth who will turn up in the auto windscreens van.

Hard work -uses a drill and a pad  I removed a number of scratches that some kind person put over my windscreen in line of my sight - took about an hour of concentrated effort. Other items from frost are interesting too

This summer I changed my windshield because of a fracture..Really a trouble job..They break and cut the original isolation done in the factory..And their isolation can not be compared to that..

Worth trying the polish job before everything else..
